sometimes!
It has just been announced that the Canadian government will NOT supply protection to Prince Harry and his wife after they step down from official duties next month.
The RCMP have been protecting them in Canada since last November, along with the usual Met police detail. But the Canadian government will no longer consider them as Internationally Protected Persons once they step down. It now becomes the couple's responsibility.
The possibility of paying for their security was hugely unpopular with Canadians ........... only 1 in 5 supported doing it in polls. So Trudeau has scored a huge "tick" for this announcement.

You can't blame Canadians for feeling that way. I think GB should carry on paying for their security even though they have stepped back from royal duties. Harry is still the Queen's grandson after all.
Personally I think the couple acted in haste and may ultimately regret their decision given time.

I've said all along we shouldn't be paying for them...they want to go into the real world and make money fine but that comes with responsibilities..that said I wish them well and hope they finally find their forever home in America.

But whats wrong with them paying for their own security.
Harry 39 million £ from Diana
Meghan has 3 million £ from her work.
I am sure they can afford to pay themselves.

Sue ................
that money won't last long if they want the same level of protection. The latest estimate by an ex-Met officer was that security for the 3 of them could be between £10 million and £25 million per YEAR, especially if they keep being in different places.
Yesterday, Harry was in Edinburgh, Meghan apparently in London, and Archie was where??

Oh, and the place they are living on Vancouver Island?
That's now got several legal large cannabis grow facilities and several legal dispensaries and shops very close by (within 10 miles).

But surely, if all goes the way the couple hope, they'll be raking in millions each year?
Other than that I can't really comment as this does not affect us here in Australia. I do however have my views on the whole debacle which I will keep firmly to myself

They're not taking the R out of RCAF as noted on another thread. And we have no problem with members of the Royal family, they have chosen to not be members of the family......

I believe they have a year to decide if they want to change their mind and come back to the fold.
Or did I hear wrong?

The Queen has said that the current arrangement will be revisited in a year, the stated idea was to check that everything was working but many people think that it could give Harry an out to return to the fold.

Rollo .............
I do wish you would keep quiet about hings about which you know a little but not enough!
Many, maybe most but not all, revere the Queen and love her as Head of State of the Commonwealth.
Many do not revere Prince Charles quite as much, though Prince William and Kate have made very good impressions on visits here. Do we revere them as future King and Queen Consort? I don't know, that's to be seen in future times.
For now, the Queen is Head of State and beloved by millions of many people around the world.
Her representative in Canada, the Governor-General, and her provincial representatives, the Lieutenant-Generals, are ALL Canadians, all of whom are well respected people in their own rights. There has not been an appointment from Britain since when 1952 when Earl Alexander of Tunis finished his term in office (1946-1952). All since then have been Canadians recommended to the Queen by the Canadian government.
The current Governor-General is Julie Payette, who you may know as a former Astronaut.
Harry is not likely to ever be King, or any closer to the throne than 6th in line.
Nor has he endeared himself over the last year, in fact it appears that he has lost a lot of the respect and, yes maybe even love, that he had attracted while he was in the military. I find it interesting that there is now so much animosity against Meghan ...... and, no it is not racist, but a result of her actions.
Ever seen the photos where the expression on her face seems to be sneering at the Queen???
Canadians are basically ignoring them, except when they push themselves to the forefront .......
........ "hey look at me, I'm visiting a women's shelter in downtown Vancouver, only I'm not going to see any of the women in the centre. I'm just going to talk to the staff."
The reaction here to that kind of thing?? :-P :-P
We have been paying for their security while members of the Royal Family, but they have chosen to step away from that family and branch out on their own. So be it.
They can pay for their own security now.
And, in my opinion, the British should now also be looking at the level of security provided for them by the Met, especially outside the UK ......... but that is YOUR government's decision to make.
Nowt to do with me.
So, I will keep my mouth shut other than what I've said above, and I wish you would keep your mouth shut about what other countries do.

Unfortunately, dear Rollo ..............
you're wrong!
Canada can refuse to pay for security, as the protection under the IPP for the Royal Family is during "official visits or on vacation". No mention is made of "while working".
It remains to be seen what the next steps will be.
However, the decision appears to be supported by all the parties in the current Parliament
But the bigger question is will they actually stay in Canada
Harry is a visitor here, no special rights because of his family connections. As such he cannot work, either voluntarily or for money.
He will have to apply for a special work visa, specifying what it is he wants to do.
Meghan might or might not still have the special work visa she had to work as an actress here, but that visa would be ONLY for that work.
Any government can override decisions made under their Immigration and visa rules and regulations.
But at the moment, they cannot work in Canada, though they could live here and work down south .............. in which case, they could be subject to double taxation in certain circumstances.

Sue ................. they've been reported to be looking at LA, Malibu, NYC, possibly Florida.
California would be near Meghan's mum.
They certainly need to be working in the US to earn anywhere near the amount of money they think they can earn, and there are tax implications if they live in one country and work in the US.
The US Tax people will be heavily investigating UK money that Harry gets when he earns money in the US ................ they love to get their sticky fingers on money earned outside the country!
I read somewhere long ago that the Queen had very experienced financial and legal experts working on this with respect to Meghan's US tax obligations before they even married. The fear was that the US tax people would insist on seeing the accounts for Royal family members other than Meghan and Harry.
They've been coming after lots of Canadian citizens who came to Canada to work as long ago as 50 or 60 years, and claiming back tax earned here if the tax paid was less than what it would have been in the US.

Even if Rollo was right about security cost while they're here in Canada...which he isn't....what happens when they finally move to the States who will pay then?
As Sylvia said they're here on holiday not as working Royals, without any other visa; as far as we're aware; than a holiday one....no working here on that visa.
I know plenty of people who live here now originally from the States and they pay a small fortune to America in taxes. It really smacks of them not planning enough even though they thought they had.

TBH ......... their "planning" is looking more and more like no planning at all
at least no planning that makes any sense.
This may be because they seem to rely on their (?Meghan's) celebrity friends, her manager from her acting days, website developers, Hollywood/LA financial advisors, Ellen de Generes, and other such people.
All Americans who are playing by American rules and methods ..........
hence why there have been so many balls-ups in how they have managed things.
They seem to have imagined, or believed, that they could just make their plans without considering any British or Canadian legal factors, no immigration or visa needs, no Royal Family factors/expectations ............ just been told that they could make loads of money working part-time at that and part-time as Royals, by people who knew sweet fanny adam about how the RF works in the UK..
It really is only their Royal titles and status that gives them any real cachet. And that is what the "celebrities" are hooked on, and why they are using H&M
Notice how Jessica Mulroney, married to the son of a former Canadian Prime Minister, has in fact been trading on her friendship with Meghan? Just after their wedding, when her children were part of the bridal party and she was shown front and centre shepherding the children on the steps of the church, she got a "job" giving fashion advice on an American TV show in NY.
Job didn't last long. I've seen images of her posting online, and it's always "Meghan Markle's friend"
I read somewhere weeks ago that Meghan's mum had been giving her/them/Harry advice on how to separate from his family. What?????????
