THE WELSHMAN WHO PLAYS FOR ITALY!

Making only his second appearance for ITALY v Wales at Parc-Y-Scarlets, Llanelli yesterday was Pembrokeshire-born STEPHEN LORENZO VARNEY.

Stephen, who plays in the Scrum-Half position (9) is a FLUENT WELSH SPEAKER who grew up in the hamlet of RHOSHILL not far south of the Ceredigion border.

STEPHEN's MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS WERE ITALIAN.
His mother Valeria's father, Carlo, came to Wales as a Prisoner of War in WWII and was assigned to work on the farms. Carlo liked it here so much that he decided to settle in Wales.

Stephen's father ADRIAN VARNEY was a talented flanker for Neath

In the lead up to yesterday's Wales v Italy game, S4C featured Italian - Welsh Families who made it in sport. Among those featured was TONIA ANTONIAZZI who won 9 Caps for WALES WOMEN as a Tighthead Prop (3)
