David .........

you've been told before that you're verging on what many people do not want to read.

I'm sure granny's wine moved her bowels! :-D :-D :-D

I was thinking perhaps a beneficial side effect was it moved his bowels/

..my gran used to grow rhubarb, and turn it into wine.
She also grew parsnips - and turned those into wine.
Gran also used to go for long walks, where she picked gorse flowers - which she turned into wine.
Gran live until she was 99.
I feel sure she'd have lived a lot longer if the care home had let her carry on her hobby.
:-D :-D :-D

My husband Uncle did the same thing David, all his family lived into their 90's so something must have been working...

Slightly off topic. When I was a boy, my Father used to cut rhubarb up into

cubes and boil it until it became a stringy suspension. Then he would let

i cool a drink it. He said it was good for your blood.

I had also heard that story, when I was about the same age ..................

probably because no birth control or legal abortion back then!

I knew about the malaria idea, Sylvia, but I was about 18 when someone I knew mentioned the other connection with quinine. She enlightened me!

I like the tonic with Mediterranean flavours.

This arvo, to keep cool, I was drinking good old M and S ginger and rhubarb - non-alcoholic too. It's lovely.

Caroline

Caroline Report 26 Jul 2019 19:33

Fruit juice always good for you surely?? :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 26 Jul 2019 19:28

Quinine was considered a protection against malaria.

That's why G&T's were a favoured drink among the Brits stationed or living, unwillingly or not, in malaria-ridden parts of the world.

Of course, they couldn't possibly drink Tonic Water by itself so they had to flavour it with Juniper Juice ;-)

Tonic water, David. It's that alcohol you add to it that makes you forget your aches and pains. ;-)

People try all sorts in an effort to improve their condition, their choice, but I prefer to trust the NHS, research-backed as it is.

Not at all sure that quinine is used in homeopathy but I remember how some young girls thought enough of it could induce a miscarriage.

A strange world we live in ... interesting times and numerous choices.

Well that would drinking or injecting pure water (?) a placebo ?

Kense

Kense Report 26 Jul 2019 16:30

The dilution is so great that the resultant solution could not contain any molecules of the original harmful substance.

I confess I've little knowledge of Homeopathy.

My trust of the NHS was 100 %

However as a consequence of becoming a cripple as a consequence of

acquiring a H A I as a result of several surgery s on my leg, I'm no longer sure..

Worthington E 80%

Kense, I "think" it's like a vaccine. There is in it a minute dose of that which

it is trying to prevent. (?)

Exactly Ken but I expect Zorro will have an ancient rellie who died a grisly death through self administering a homeopathic preparation. ;-) :-\

Kense

Kense Report 26 Jul 2019 15:59

At least with homeopathic medicine there can be virtually zero harm in using it and the placebo effect must be very strong.

Island Report 26 Jul 2019 15:20

Doing a 'you know who'

David, gone off-piste again.

In my book:

Homeopathy 100 if you embrace it wholly

NHS 10 if admin don't lose your notes

Joy, I never did understand why TAJ was put forward as a suitor when 'they' were marrying Margaret off but then Roddy L seemed to be her choice. I think she liked the jet setter life too much to cut loose and be happy.
