"The restriction on Irish postal voting has nothing to do with fiddling results at polls."

never said it did, I said

"Restrictive but not denied. Also postal voting is open to abuse so they'd rather see you in person."

So in plain language i can see why they would NOT want postal votes as they can be fiddled whereas it's less likely (though not impossible) to fiddle when you actually have to show up in person. In other words I can send in 50 postal votes but not likely to attend 50 stations.

The results of an opinion poll published today recorded 55% in favour & 45% against.

Doesn't mean a thing until all the votes are cast.....or am I wrong on that too :-)

and since when did BC want to separate from Canada??

from Rollo's post .................

"If the Quebec independence referendum had been passed then it is likely that Canada itself would have broken up / merged with the USA. It wasn't and today Canada is a strong state with a culture very different to the USA. The question of independence for Quebec or BC has died away."

-----------
There never has been any real push for BC to be independent from Canada.

What you might be thinking of (if you can think) is of Cascadia ................ which is a notion that BC, Washington, Oregon and northern California are more closely aligned than they are to their respective eastern capitals. This is being extended by the development of closer ties between these regions, suggestions that rapid transit south to north might be advantageous, closer connections between the IT centres in California, Seattle and Vancouver.

The idea usually raises its head more often when there is a great separation between the Federal government in Washington, DC and the states' populace. As the west coast states are more usually Democrat this usually happens when there are Republicans in power, especially ones who don't believe in certain beliefs, eg legalizing marijuana, abortion etc.

Don't be misled by what your cousin in Calgary might have told you .............. BC is happier being in Canada than politically aligned with the US states.

We have much in common, but even more that is NOT.

Caroline - just to clarify: voting on some of Ireland's off-shore islands commenced today.

The row boats landed then Dermot.

Whichever way people voted I hope the country can settle down a bit now......

Delighted that Eire voted for choice.

Dermot

Dermot Report 27 May 2018 07:27

The result is loud & clear. The 'Irish Question' has been answered. The people have voted for a reform agenda - no more 'hanging in the air'.

Now the Irish Government has to draw up legislation & the electorate have to live with the decision. The Catholic Church's tight grip has been untied.

Interesting times.

Good! Now NI need to reform their legislation.

Dermot

Dermot Report 27 May 2018 09:52

Good luck with the NI reform. You'll need it!

Bunnyboo

Bunnyboo Report 27 May 2018 10:05

I'm sure Eire will live with the result perfectly happily! NI may well start clamouring for the same - be difficult to refuse long term.

At least the vote is showing that we are in the 21st century NOT the 18th.

The DUP believe in 12 July 1690 as a sort of perpetual groundhog day.
Even as I write they are sharpening their bowler hats, ironing their sashes, tunig their flutes and fixing any holes in their Lambeg drums.

May has hitched her star to these people (?) and she will pay dearly for doing so..

Sure it’s old, but it is beautiful
And the colors they are fine
It was worn at Derry, Aughrim,
Enniskillen, and the Boyne.
Sure my father wore it when a youth
In the bygone days of yore,
And it’s on the twelfth I love to wear
The sash my father wore.
Sure I’m an Ulster Orangeman
And from Erin’s Isle I came
To see my lads go gravlin
Of honor and of fame.
And to tell them of my forefathers
Who fought in days of yore
All on the twelfth day of July
In the sash my father wore.
Chorus
So here I am in Glasgow town
To find them girls to see
And I’m hoping good old orange Ulster
That you all will welcome me.
A true blue blade has just arrived
From the dear old Ulster shore
All on the 12th day of July
In the sash my father wore.
Chorus
Oh, when I’m going to leave you all
Oh, good luck to you I’ll say
As I cross the raging sea, my boys,
Surely the orange flute I’ll play.
And returning to my native town
To old Belfast once more
To be welcomed by those Orangemen
In the sash my father wore.

Dermot
This is the 6th time of asking for the Repeal. And thank goodness it's given all the women what they have been asking for CONTROL OVER THEIR OWN BODIES.

Not some old fashioned church doctrine.

Caroline

Caroline Report 27 May 2018 14:09

Sue....maybe the vote should have only been open to women to vote in seeing as ultimately it is their bodies affected....but anyway it was totally open and the results are in so now to implement everyones wishes.

Whenever there have been anti-abortion rallies here, and there were many back in the 70s though the 90s, it always seemed that men protesters way outnumbered women.

If any violence was committed, including killing doctors who performed abortions, it was usually men who committed the worst violence.

I always found that interesting .......... and considered it controlling

I don't call it pro- or anti-abortion

To me it is pro-choice or anti-choice ............... with the control of choosing handed to women
