It seems to have cleared a bit now. I hav'nt tried getting into my tree today.

no problems logging in to GR via computer or smart phone
windows 7, 10 fibre connection
android nougat 7.1.1 4G

GR is hosted on Microsoft IIS servers which are mainly used for intranets and non public servers. There are security issues which can be fixed by demanding a fast response from the client. Unfortunately this may result in the client being unable to connect at all especially 1700-2400.

A fix which will sometimes work and is sure to speed up yr browsing is to configure yr router to use google DNS rather than the ISP DNS. Free.

Most people connect to the internet at home using a router adsl or fibre.
Connection to the router ( some still call it a modem ) will be either wifi or ethernet cable. Cable is much faster so if you have connexion problems with wifi try cable.

DNS domain name service translates text urls into ip numeric addresses which computers understand. The DNS performance is crucial. That of many UK ISPs is poor BT being good. By far the easiest way to fix this is to bring up the config screen in yr router using yr browser and change the dns to 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4. (google).

God helps those who help themselves.

Mine's been working ok for a while now,

reply from GR

"Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

This problem has now been resolved and will work correctly if you would like to try again.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that was caused by this problem.

If you need any further assistance please do let me know.

With kind regards,"

Caroline

Caroline Report 8 Sep 2017 13:35

As much as Rollo may be right in his tec comments it's clearly not our problem therefore why bother going through all that!! It was Genes and their system so plugging the cable into my computer will make no difference.

LaGooner Report 8 Sep 2017 13:36

I have just had the same reply from GR, Hopefully sorted now without tampering with my laptop and router etc which no doubt I would b****r up completely. I cannot use a cable as it would have to be across part of the floor and a trip hazard to me and my gammy knees and not all of us have degrees in IT :-D :-D

Very slow response from GR site I've noticed, and seems I'm not the only one that's noticed.

There was never any fault with the Genes server but hey sending a message is ez enough to do. Testing a connection from the client side is very easy to do as well and doesn't need a degree in I.T.

Leaving wifi autoconnect enabled and using the default wifi password is a great way to be hacked thus a good reason to say hello to your router control panel. Laziness and lack of knowledge are at the root of all security breaches such as yesterday's record at Equifax.

All current routers support connections at 2.4 and 5.0 MHz. Performance with the latter us much better - make sure you are using it!

good luck
