Sue In Yorkshire. Report 9 Aug 2017 22:56

I bought a picture of a Gertrude Knight in an Auction last week She is dressed either in a Governess uniform or in a WW1 nurses uniform. She is sat writing at a desk.

In the background of the photo it looks like she is sat in a room with a big fireplace with a Calendar on the side(looks like there is a WW1 nurse on the front of the calendar.Sorry can't see the date or year.

In the photo which she has signed She looks to be writing a letter to her family.

The clothes she is wearing is a long black dress with a white collar and white cuffs and frilled bow and a white bonnet which has white ribbon going behind her ears.

She is also wearing what looks like the Military Cross with a ribbon on her left hand side of the dress.

She has also got a long chain round her neck which hangs down to her waist
.
Gertrude is not wearing any rings .

She looks to be about 30/35 years old so I have put her birthdate roughly to near 1875/1880.

The photo was taken by a person or firm named """"LAFAYETTE""

If anyone has this lady in their tree and can prove it is their relation.

I will send them the photo.

Have a look here and see if this could be the same person (although the photo is not very good):-

http://rcnarchive.rcn.org.uk/data/VOLUME058-1917/page377-volume58-2ndjune1917.pdf

Could the decoration she is wearing be The Royal Red Cross which can be seen here (and is awarded for exceptional services in military nursing):-

Lafayette have been photographers since 1880.

Kathleen,
The photo of your Gertrude is not very clear but had a look and I am going by the high cheek bones and the red cross you have given is exactly the same as the one on her dress.

I bought this photo in Rowsley. Derbyshire as I couldn't let anyone else get it as they may not have been interested in returning it to the Knight or descendants of Gertrude.

Hope you find someone in Gertrude's family to pass the photo on to. Have you "searched all member trees" to see if anyone has a Gertrude Knight born around the right time in their tree?

Sorry, I should have said I had no connection to Gertrude Knight. Just hopeful that any old photos can be reunited with the right families.

I absolutely love looking at old photos - I have loads of photos of some of my ancestors going back to the 1800's. I seem to end up with everyone's photos when they are having a clear out and I can't bear to throw any of them away!!

UPDATE..

I have researched everyone of the children that belong to Edwin and Esther Martha.

They were very unlucky with their sons

Herbert Wilson died as a baby age roughly 10 months. 1871

Ernest William drowned off Cape Town age 17 in 1879

Edwin Peter died in Cardiff age 16 in 1876.

2 of the lads Percy Edward and Arthur Henry lived over 40yrs old.

Can't a marriage for either of them.

All the daughters died never marrying and only one of them died after Margaretta Gertrude.

Do you think the Nottingham Archives might be interested? You could put together a brief written resume of the research you and others have made.
