MAORI ALL BLACKS

The Maori All Blacks, previously called the New Zealand Maori, is a rugby union team from New Zealand.

A prerequisite for playing in this team is that the player has Maori whakapapa (genealogy).In the past, this rule was often flouted and Non-Maori players who visually could pass for a Maori selected for the team.


The Early Maori All Blacks sported a uniform consisting of a BLACK JERSEY with the SILVER FERN and WHITE KNICKERBOCKERS.

The tradition of the performing of a HAKA, which we have all come to enjoy watching before a game involving The New Zealand All Blacks, originated with the Maori All Blacks.


The Maori All Blacks first International game was against Ireland in 1888, which they won. Their second International was against Wales in Swansea in 1889. They lost this game to the Welsh.
