ensuring that you spell someone's name correctly, even if is a board name, is just plain good manners and courtesy.

Thinking it is a useless thing to complain about is pomposity

My real life moniker is unusual, folks misspelled it and mispronounced it all my life. Did I get in a sweat about it? Of course not. Only egoists find such things to be of high importance.

Caroline

Caroline Report 31 Jan 2017 22:26

Really egoists.........surely not.....it's just good manners to use the correct name if possible.

That said we can all make mistakes so when you do just say sorry.

You must be a descendant of James Watt Rolo

There is a lady called Sharon who posts on here occasionally. I am sure she would also find it quite important that she be known by her proper name.

Egoists are the people who think they are above employing good manners.

...wish there was a 'like' button on here!!

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Feb 2017 00:13

Oh dear a like button.......would there also by default be a dislike button and would there be a maximum number it would go up to.......

My daughter has an unusual name, I thought it was quite easy to pronounce but many others have had problems with it, and SHE has spent her whole life with people mis-prouncing her name

What did she do????

She found a nice courteous way of telling people that her name was actually pronounced as xxxxxxx, and not yyyyyy

No-one has ever complained, nor have they mis-pronounced her name after the gentle reminder.

OH has an unusual spelling to his name ............ most people spell it wrong. He doesn't get too bothered about it, except when it comes to legalities ............... and my extended family who always spell it wrong.

As I said earlier ................ it is courteous and plain good manners to ensure that you say and spell someone's name as it should be.

My maiden name is unusual, most people get both the pronunciation and spelling wrong, then try to tell me where it probably came from (what would I know) - and how it SHOULD be pronounced!

One of the reasons, when I divorced, I kept my married name :-D

Guinevere Report 1 Feb 2017 08:36

I have an unusual Christian name and a board name that some find hard to spell. I can't get worked up about it, I know if someone means me.

After a lifetime of misspelling I really can't find it in me to care.

Dermot

Dermot Report 1 Feb 2017 08:56

Should we cast a spell over misspelling?

Sharron

Sharron Report 1 Feb 2017 10:00

Anyway, having considered all the little clues he has given on this thread, I think I have worked out what Rollo's real given name is. I think he must have been named after a king, that Danish one.

Oh,you know,he tried to hold back the sea.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Feb 2017 10:14

So he has a Southampton connection then...??

Sharron

Sharron Report 1 Feb 2017 10:16

He does?

I prefer to not think about his connections!

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Feb 2017 10:25

Sorry I was saying that as the person to whom you refer as a possible name does have connections with Southampton.......No idea with Rollo......

Sharron

Sharron Report 1 Feb 2017 10:35

I didn't know the gentleman I referred to had any connection to Southampton either.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Feb 2017 10:37

The one that tried to hold back the sea ??...yes.....road named after him and he was in Southampton when declared King....are we allowed to mention the name ? :)
