So you're saying all people with accents are just being targeted are you ? then it's a really serious problem. Or as I questioned before is there more to this story...

It would seem odd to be asked to leave a pub you use regularly because other people are behaving in an anti-social manner.

Now I have personally experienced verbal abuse.

Firstly when I lived in Germany by the 40 - 50 age group (until I answered their taunts about 'Auslander' in German). That was in the early 70s

In Wales in the mid 80s there was (and still is) in some areas a deep distrust of the English. We fought hard to fit in and succeeded. My children when visiting rural pubs were subjected to muttered abuse but stunned those muttering by answering them in their first language WELSH.

In France quite often service staff refuse to speak anything other than French. Doesn't worry me as I speak for everyone.

In Australia I was picked on quite often when I spoke, you live with it.

In England there is obviously a better class of racist scum who make it their business to be as obnoxious as possible.

I am sure many felt despair when we joined the European Community but we survived.

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 13:11

So I think you've proven my point, it's not due to Brexit it's worldwide to some degree !!

Brexit must succeed...umm maybe because the majority voted for it and the Government is meant to follow their instructions maybe......

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 1 Sep 2016 13:23

Police say that hate crime rose 57% in the days after the vote.

and "42 per cent more hate crime was reported to them in the last two weeks of June than there had been in the corresponding period of 2015."

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-racism-uk-post-referendum-racism-hate-crime-eu-referendum-racism-unleashed-poland-racist-a7160786.html

So some of it *is* due to Brexit.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 13:29

Does that hate crime break down how many people were attacking people that voted for brexit as well as those voting against.
Hate crime always happens in this case brexit was used as the reason rightly or wrongly.
Don't for a minute think I agree with any hate crime

Sharron

Sharron Report 1 Sep 2016 13:32

Statistics can be used to prove anything you want to prove.

Statistics prove that most people are dead.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 13:38

And how much was actually proven crime and not just people blaming brexit.....it happens

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 1 Sep 2016 13:44

What the stats cannot quantify is the number of attacks made by idiots who had the racist card hidden and used Brexit as an excuse to justify their actions. The ages of the reported crimes does not equate to 15 year olds.

That was my point! I would imagine these murderous thugs would have chosen any victim who was vulnerable to an attack. He happened to be Polish. Until the evidence by independent witnesses is heard it's all speculation.

The only proven fact is these yobs murdered someone and they got bailed!

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 13:48

yes and they would probably have hit anyone for any reason, wrong colour of hair...wrong football team.....did they mean to kill him with that hit probably not.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 1 Sep 2016 14:27

No one wants to believe the police figures?

If you read the article no one said they did it because of Brexit but the statistics speak for themselves. Hate crime was up, or does anyone think the police were lying?

I'm talking about the rise in racial hate crime after the referendum not what happened in Essex. That has yet to be decided.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 19:44

police figures like all stats tell the story they want told.

we all know there are times when certain crimes are more on the radar than others maybe they were just looking out for more hate crime after the vote because they expected it..just a thought...

just like they make more of an effort to catch drunk drivers at certain times of the year

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 1 Sep 2016 20:36

No, you're wrong.

Police have to record hate crimes all year round. They can't pick and choose when to do it, they are compelled to do it all the time.

The figures speak for themselves. Racism and hate crimes are on the up. And increased dramatically after the vote. That's a fact.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Sep 2016 21:36

Well we beg to differ and with serving police officers in my family I can only tell what I'm told.

Brexit is not to blame, those that may commit hate crimes have always done it and would have done it without the vote. Again not all of those that voted Brexit are bigots.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 2 Sep 2016 05:24

Recorded statistics are always more reliable than anecdotal evidence.- that's why they are officially recorded rather than randomly asking passing police officers.

If you don't want to believe the evidence that's up to you, and maybe the earth is flat, some people believe that as well.

Thanks Det that was a very interesting read.

Certainly sheds light on the way the force are dealing with reports.

Interesting article, although coming from the Spectator one would expect a Conservative right wing bias.

The writer gives his bias away in the last paragraph by referring to a "leftie" magazine, so I'll help myself to a tonne of salt.
