I've been here almost a long as Lynda, and the site isn't a shadow of what it used to be.
as was said earlier it was quite like a village,but sadly many of the villagers have moved on,

however, on here help is there for the asking, sometimes its seems "beyond the call of duty" I have indeed been helped out in several quests......

seem to recall a suitcase of old letters found in a loft, and in a couple of days I believe they were passed on to descendants.....

I have in the past,upset some people on the way here, sometimes through not thinking through what I was writing, some times just by my way of expressing myself, but I'm still here and hope to be for some time.....

I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder, as well as GAD, amongst other mental health issues so am pretty nervous about saying things in public.

It took me a long while to get round to helping on the genealogy boards, though they are easier as you are just posting information a lot of the time, and even there it took me a while to voice my opinions strongly - I suppose I thought/think I'll be shot down for being stupid.

Cynthia & i thought of you as a friend - not even a mention

I feel the other way - I don't know if I can trust FB yet - I don't tend to use it enough

I have been a member a long time - but as i work full time don't have the time at weekends to get on the boards

A few years ago i had a couple of serious operations & was at home - not very mobile - so had a good look at the boards & found a thread that looked interesting. A few people chatting & laughing & tentatively made an inquiry. they took me in to their thread & treated me as an old friend - we use to have a lot of laughs.

Without them at that time I would have melted into a very black depression - left on my own - i owe them all so very much - mentioning no names - Cynthia will remember the good old days . I wish they would all come back again.

One by one they have moved on - there are not many of us left now & we don't tend to have the good old days of laughs & stupidity.

Perhaps we all grew up too much - even if we were all on the other side of 40 at the time - we had a lot of fun

I think the RR'er has a lot to do with the boards going quiet & some members tend to take things very personally - when all that is required is a debate & share of ideas. its very easy to pick on a thought & take it the wrong way. That is why a lot of people do not respond to threads.

A few times i have decided to join it - but been trodden on - even when said Its personal to me comment

We need to bring the fun back to the boards

Rose i read a lot of your threads or messages - i don't think you ramble - i know I do - i often change track mid ramble

Now what was the question again? :-D :-D

If i post i always try to reply some time that day even if its in the evening - it may be a few hours but I always say thank you for the help

Tabitha - we have lost the art of having fun. And we scare too easily about many things - some important matters & others not.

We are a nation of financial worriers. Today's concern fired-up by multiple media hype, for example, is the cost of plastic carrier bags. Doesn't really seem very much compared to the pitiful refugee situation. You see what I mean?

I have been a member for a month longer than Bob, but if you look at the number of posts we have made you will see I don't really have have too much to say for myself, although I do often snarl at the laptop when I read something, or type and delete on other occasions.
I didn't join in on the boards in my early days here (I couldn't type fast enough!) but since reading the boards I have often held back from posting for many of the reasons already put forward by others.
I do find at times there are double standards, two people post about the same thing - one post(er) is acceptable, the other isn't.

It's been really interesting reading these replies, the different reasons why you don't post.

I've never felt I couldn't post, and am never bothered if I've been rr'd, after all it'll be only one person who has reported, and I assume they have nothing better to do, poor thing, and not much I say is of any importance :-)

Having said that way back, I did have 2 threads reported and removed, that I felt were interesting and informative, one was about mothers who disliked their children, the thread had many replies and some were shocked that there were others who suffered, up until then they thought they were the only ones it happened to.

The other thread was about raising awareness to the fact that boys 18-30 ish, were more prone to suicide, again a really interesting thread, I don't say that because I think I am interesting, but that those who replied were. I know both those threads were reported because they were posted by me, there seemed to be a jealousy thing going on, and a group of people, thought I was getting too much interest. jealousy has never been a thing with me, so never understood the reasoning behind those who are jealous.

I come and go from the boards, but lately each time I come back the boards are quieter. I've made many friends from GR, was out with two of them on Saturday, and we were saying that we have been good friends for over 10 years :-D

Kucinta, there used to be some real know-it-alls on here, who's answers used to make my toes curl. I've often asked a question that I thought I bet everyone else knows the answer, only to be surprised when others said they'd glad I'd asked the question because they'd often wondered the answer. A question is only easy if you know the answer, never be afraid to ask :)

Bob, as for you being here nearly as long as me, it'll be 13 years in November, and I'm still only 27, so I joined at 14, how old were you ;-)

I rarely come on the boards these days just because I seem to be so busy. However, when I do come on I don't comment on the general chat as I can't always keep track of the threads., so my isolated comments could be overlooked, or commented on and I would never know . I used to enjoy the banter when I first joined lots of friendly chat., not so much of that lately in my opinion.

Hello to all. Hope life is being kind to you..

I must say I absolutely agree with Lynda about stickied threads.

It always reminds me of tombstone inscriptions that read "gone but not forgotten" with a vase of decaying flowers at the side.

Quite often it is obvious that there are people who could tend the grave because the tombstone lists children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren etc etc

Cynthia Report 6 Oct 2015 08:19

The stickied thread issue caused some problems a while ago. I did suggest at the time that we had an 'In memoriam' board, but nothing ever came of it.

I agree with Tabitha......(get on FB more :-D) that we used to have a lot of fun on some of the threads a few years ago. We had cyber birthday parties, events, games and all sorts of silliness but it was good fun and I do miss that aspect.

When dear old Jonesey was alive, he was a regular contributor to Gin's thread and we would have great fun teasing each other, swapping stories, asking advice and preparing cyber meals. So silly but so good. :-D

Do you think there are any staff members left at GR, or have they all gone? ;-)

Lynda ~ Report 6 Oct 2015 08:26

Cynthia, they have left the building, passed the key on to me, and waiting for me to turn the lights out :-D

I haven't removed my thread about Elaine's death and I won't, because I have noticed that often people come back to the boards after a while away, and wouldn't see the sad news, as in the case of our Gwen.

I am sure the time will come when GR will unsticky my thread and the others too.

I add to other threads sometimes but use fb too altho that's more for non gr friends.

~~~Hello Lynda~~~, probably not the same thing but I've never stopped being a member however I haven't looked in or posted in an eternity. Just trying to get back into the habit as I've got a long journey to work for a few months and think I should start doing my family tree again now that we've got the winter months and the dark nights :-)
Lynda ~
Lynda ~ Report 6 Oct 2015 09:12
Liz, some people come back after a year or two away, so does that mean you would leave your post for years? Surely if someone has been away for a long time, and they didn't know about a death, then that would mean they didn't keep in touch with anyone from GR, so they aren't close friends, and if a member does come back after a while away, they would ask where someone was surely? I flit in and out of GR, and when I returned this time, I was amazed to see the same threads stickied.
Unfortunately many people have died who used GR. If all deaths was stickied, the front page would be full of these threads. There isn't another site I use where this practice happens, and it seems odd to me that it happens on GR, it never used to.
Hiya SRS :-D I do my family tree all year round, but do it more in the winter months. Happy rellie hunting :-)
Guinevere Report 6 Oct 2015 12:03
I have to agree with Lynda, the stickied threads linger too long. As she said the front page would be full if all stickied threads remained.
2 or 3 months is quite long enough, that's how it used to be before GR abandoned the boards.
Well Lynda, given the wide experience of life(off the boards) that you appear to have, I would think that 27 is a very young age, now I'm sure you don't tell porkies, more like "terminological inexactitudes"
but I was at that "comical" age of 64, when I joined up.......(Grandad, Grandad,............we love you......etc)
Lynda, before you lock up, have a look round and see if you can find the poppies ready for November. They had great difficulty finding them last year if I remember rightly. :-)
Cynthia - can FB be trusted not to give out your location - i know they did that a while ago - as well as a few other hidden items that you dont want the general public to see about you
I always look you up on FB when i go on it - just don't really know how to post on there yet - I can just about answer a question - add a Like and maybe even add a message to someone already posted
I have a long while to go to reach Bob's elevated status
I joined in May 2003 - But didn't really start posting on the General thread till June 2009
hi Tabitha,
that posting tally, as far as I know is the number of posts still on the boards,
deleted posts/threads, for whatever reason don't show in the tally
