A hooker is the man that is in the middle of the front row in a scrum, being propped up by the two props, one each side.

He "hooks" the ball with his foot to drag it forward as the scrum is being pushed forward to gain ground. Eventually the ball comes out for the Scrum Half (9) to grab and play.
