Sounds like the float aint being raised by the incoming water so that valve arm attached to the ball can shut the water off ( it opens and closes the water valve).
Could be a pretty simple adjustment but without actually seeing it I cant really say what the problem is.

Have had a traumatic day - ran my car into the back of another at a turn left junction this afternoon - woman driver got out - about eight months pregnant - I nearly died!!! Fortunately no damage done at all but I is all shook up :-(
