Sharron Report 10 Jul 2012 07:51

I have grey hair, mostly because I wouldn't want the faff, not to mention the expense,of being otherwise.

There was a clip on the television yesterday of Ernest Borgnine receiving a lifetimes achievement award for something. He ,at 93 then I think, looked great with his white hair. All around him, as he walked to the stage, were elderly gents who looked like they had borrowed somebody elses hair. He looked great, they looked old and daft.

I never liked Tom Jones much but he now looks as desirable as a man of his age can again, He didn't when he had black facial and head hair.He was doing a pretty fair impression of the devil.

For some reason, Sharron, men who dye their hair manage to look ridiculous. Women, on the other hand, and I agree it is a hassle, can look great! *pats freshly dyed Titian hair (cost £6.99) and totters off. :-D BCXX

Isn't it the same with bald heads too? Nobody notices a bald head butyou can't miss a toupe!

I stopped colouring my hair about 6 years ago.....The front is white & the rest is grey.....My hair fell out last year cos of having chemo......it's grown now but i still keep it cropped & i will still not be putting a colour on it cos i love it :-D

I have enjoyed watching the grey come in to mine and I like the shade too. Still can't wait for it to go white.

And there was me thinking you were ash-blonde, Sharron!

Agree with you about older men dyeing their hair. Paul McCartney immediately springs to mind - that ghastly red colour looks ridiculous.

I have very pale skin with freckles and as my hair went grey I looked so washed out.
I started having highlights done at first when I was about 41 ,and this disguised the grey. I was working so the upkeep wasnt a problem.

As the years went on and the grey got more pronounced i used to home colour it although sometimes the results were a bit patchy with build up of colour at the back because the grey was in the front.

I broke my arm so couldnt even wash my hair so started going locally each week for a shampoo and for a colour every 6weeks .

Have tried over the years to let it go grey but it makes me so washed out looking and is very ageing that I have gone back to salon colour and styling every six weeks, I go on a Tuesday which is pensioners day, half price, and have a manicure too whilst the colour is taking , costs me £34 for the hair and £16.50 for the nails but its my treat to ME . I don't spend very much on myself anyway ,clothes are chore to buy as I am a big girl and don't find shopping that enjoyable so if my hair looks nice then I feel good . :-P

it's not grey! It's "mature blonde"

I have some mature blonde mixed in with the rest of it, so I get blonde "foils" done at the salon. One of these days they will merge.

OH always wanted a blonde with big ( . )( . )

I can do something about the hair lolol

People seem to forget that it is not only hair that loses pigment with age,it is skin too.

I sat in a pub in Pompey once (no Wend, not that time) and two ladies came in,fashionably well dressed with very smart hair styles. They sat where I could not see them well. One walked past me to the bar and, from under the thirty year old hair on the fashionably clad body there peered a wrinkly old face of somebody well past working age. The contrast with the young hair just made the face look much older.

Would have thought that having pale skin would have made it possible to make the eyes stand out but mine have become even more like pee holes in the snow as I have aged so it probably wouldn't!

I think it depends what grey it is. I colour mine because at the moment while turning grey it is dark at the back and steel grey on top and white at the side, if and when it goes a nice light grey all over I shall stop colouring. But I have it done at the hairdressers and only have it done about every 3-4 months, the last month it is a mixture of light brown, blond and grey in the summer months.

I have small piggy eyes too with bags so they are a no no as well. i have to wear glasses now so at least they hide the under eye bags..

My freckles have faded down over the years and arent that prominent now but behind them is still the very pale skin so i need colour to lift me.

The colouring is done so well that it looks very natural. have had people say how lucky i am that my hair is still light brown and hasn't greyed and I always say yep a couple of dye mixes works very well!!

i often get compliments on the colour of my hair and believe it or not it cost me £2 69 every 4 weeks, only because my hair grows very quick. It is from Aldi a Carino 10/03 lightest beige blonde.Always had it done at the hairdressers but when oh came out of work had to make cut backs, tried various dearer ones then took the plunge with this one.Oh is now in full time employment again but have been useing this for 2yrs now and wouldnt change it.The only tip i can give is if you like it buy 2 or 3 as it sells out very quickly.Another tip on colouring if you can get a bobble in your hair do so then go round the hair line then like streaks all round from front to back to the bobble leave for 15mins remove bobble and rub into rest of hair, gives nice even colour

I'm letting my hair grow out to it's natural grey. I've coloured for years because I didn't like my hair half and half. Now it's fully grey I'm happy to go with it. I like it - it's a nice soft grey and if it makes me look older well....I am older :-D

My hair has always been abit of a bain in my life. Very dark, almost black, but with a little red in it, (mother was auburn, her dad very ginger), and with the consistancy of negroid hair, (no, mother did not have a bike). It was like the hair of Diana Ross. How I wish it had been fashionable in my younger days to have those corncrows (sp) with beeds woven in. I would have been on the front row to have these done.
But over the years, I have had it cut shorter and shorter, to keep it straight. Even now, if I go over my usual six-week hairdressing appointment, there is a row of tiny black curls growing across the bottom of my neck hairline.
Now, it has quite abit of grey in it, and only the other night, I mentioned to the OH about having it 'done' totally grey. But, I havn't quite got the nerve to go the 'whole hog'.
I have two daughters with the same dark hair as mine, but straighter, and a son with mid-brown hair. Other daughter is abit of a mousey brown, as I seem to recollect, but has been having an auburn rinse on her hair for years.
What to do.? Such a delemma.!!

I used to love doing my mums' hair for her and always
hoped mine would go white like hers. She had a good
thick head of hair and always looked good when she
had it done even at 93.
Well I got my wish, I am also blessed with thick hair and
am also white......but NOT 93 yet :-D :-D
