The Lepers Corner in the beer gardens for the smokers is where I mainly speak to strangers too...we've all got 5 mins spare to pass the time of day so it seems rude not to lol x

Stray I do understand people from Oop North, love the Geordie accent and used to have a boss who came from Middlesborough, Have a good friend who was born and brought up in Yorkshire and who has never lost her accent and spend a lot of time in the Lake District so I am sure I would understand you :-D

The accent I have most problem with is Glaswegian. But it is not really accents/dialects (you should hear some from round here), it is people who mumble, look away or cover their mouth when they speak that I have a problem with.

Usual greeting is Hi / Hello how are you ? Obviously shorten with our dialect ;-)

If I am in the mood to talk I am happy to start up a conversation with a stranger,providing it is relevant to the situation. Hence at work in the hospital I would never engage in conversation with a patient, for fear of getting their medical history.Likewise on a holiday where, for whatever reason people want to tell you about their previous holidays, I don't want to know.

I smile when a stranger goes on to tell me that their young relative has a good job. Over the years I have often wondered 'what is a good job?'. A term which has always fascinated me but I would feel impolite if I questioned what their idea of a good job was. -jl

certainly not common Stray!!!! Love all accents - that's what makes the UK such an interesting place - wouldn't live anywhere else, Wales is best of course - that goes without saying :-D :-D :-D :-D

one day while doing my walking in the footsteps of my family in the 1800
we visited Barnard castle and in the village
we met a very old man we stood talking to him for over two hours
how interesting he told us all about the village when he was young
his swimming in the river and fishing and the people he remembered from his youth
it really opened my eyes to village life and i loved hearing about it
we then moved to the cemetery to do some grave rubbings
and met a young lady who lived in the cemetery lodge
and we talked to her for ages
she even made us a cuppa northern people are like that friendly
she pointed us i n the direction of a number of graves we needed to log
and she showed us her home which was Gothic
but she had a modern twist to the decoration and it was wonderful
i may not of got much family history done that day
but i think it was a very memorable day to he honest filled with tales of other peoples lives :-D

isn't it nice when you come across people like that - years ago when my OH was still with us we went for a drive to Porthcawl - very familiar, but took a turn up a lane to see what was there - it was a dead end with a few houses - as we turned the car around a man came out and asked if we were lost - well we weren't technically. Anyway, we got chatting and I mentioned that there didnlt seem to be anywhere in Porthcawl where you could get a decent cup of coffee - with that we were invited it, given lovely coffee and spent the morning with him and his wife

think that's what's called serendippity

another strange thing about meeting strangers - back in 1976 we went to USA, New England area to visit friends - we met people from Cardiff who had moved to Delaware and not only did they know our present neighbours, they also knew the neighbours we had when we lived in Caerphilly - gobsmacked we were

I don't particularly put myself out to talk to strangers, although they seem to zone in on me anyway! Last evening I had an hour long conversation with a fascinating man with no teeth, who came to London from Indonesia in 1961. I was merely walking my dog and enjoying the warm air when he stopped to admire her. :-D

they reckon going out with a dog is the best way to make friends!!! my cat won't come out with me :-D
