Island, strangely enough I never went to the Hammersmith Palais. Too far to get home.

Me gels and meself went to the Tottenham Royal. A wonderful Art Deco theatre converted to a dancehall. With a fishpond in the entrance.

We had some great nights there, getting home late, then getting up to go to work in the mornings. [couldn't do it now]

Wearing new shoes, and carrying them home in my hand.

Just wondering.....sit down in a theatre type concerts or stand up at dances with name bands? or just famous people we have seen perform live?

I ask because in me teeny bopper and student days saturday night wasn't complete without going to the local dance hall or later uni hall with top bands.

Then there was the Hammersmith Palais and the Fulham Greyhound which I bet MotownGirl and Carol numbers were no strangers to :-D :-D :-D

Jude yes he used to sing those sort of songs and Rosemarie. He was quite a big man, big voice, Canadian. Quite good looking

I looked him and was surprised myself at what he had done. And also that he only died three years ago aged 89

Hockridge had his own radio show in Canada: nonetheless, at the age of 31, he decided to return to Britain. There could not have been a better time to make the move. Stephen Douglass, the American actor playing Billy Bigelow in Carousel, had exhausted his work permit and a new lead man was needed. The role called for an imposing character with stamina and a powerful voice. Someone, as the script says, "as tall and as strong as a tree". Hockridge, at 6ft 1in and, according to one critic, with "looks girls long to encounter on the beach" fitted the bill.

He played the fairground barker Billy more than 1,000 times in London and hundreds of times on the provincial tour. For seven years he was regarded as "London's resident male lead", topping the bill in the first London productions of Guys and Dolls (1953-54), Can-Can (1954-55) and The Pajama Game (1955-56). He became a major recording artist as a result of his success in musicals, having a hit with Hey There, from The Pajama Game. Carousel was also to change Hockridge's personal life. In the cast was a 19-year-old dancer and singer called Jackie Jefferson. He was smitten by her but was still married, and 13 years her senior. The couple chose to keep their affair low-key, eventually marrying after his first wife agreed to a divorce. They moved to Peterborough (where they lived next door to Ernie Wise) and brought up a family.

During his 50-year career Hockridge recorded 11 albums and worked with a dazzling array of old-style stars, including Tommy Cooper, Eartha Kitt, Max Wall, Roy Hudd, Cliff Richard, Billy Dainty, Morecambe and Wise, and Petula Clark. In 1986, aged 67, he partnered the rock singer Suzi Quatro in a London production of Annie Get Your Gun (his seventh musical) and also appeared with Isla St Clair in a provincial production of The Sound of Music (1984).

For many years Hockridge lived quietly in Peterborough, the city to which he had been persuaded to move by his immediate neighbour, the comedian Ernie Wise.

edit to say he wasn't in Rosemarie I don't think

Well here's one I doubt many will remember. Went to see Edmund Hockridge at the Kings Theatre Portsmouth, can't remember the year but I went with my Mum so I was probably in my early teens. And we went to the stage door afterwards and met him.
Also met Petula Clark although didn't see her sing live, she was signing records when my Dad was manager of the shop.

Guinevere Report 17 Apr 2012 07:56

I coudn't begin to list them all. In the 1960s there was a pop music bill every week at our local theatre so I saw "everyone" who was anyone in the 60s.

We still go to concerts but they cost a lot more now. Highlights of concerts would be
Beatles x2
Stones
Kinks
Deep Purple
Bowie
Queen
Moody Blues (almost every tour)
Eagles
REM
