Just a small observation here, and certainly NOT a dig at anyone, but if we are talking of perceived 'cliques' on this board, we do have threads on here, that by their titles, could be perceived as 'cliquey'. ie, 'Canucks International', and the Aussies thread.

Anyone who looks into these threads and actually reads them, would know right away they are open and friendly threads for all, not just the nationalities mentioned, but the title would surely give a new person the PERCEPTION that it might be exclusive, therefore the entire board being 'cliquey'.

Maybe if the thread titles of these and others were better thought out and written to sound more inclusive that perception might diminish?

Again, I've used those two as an obvious example, not singling anyone or any thread in particular.

Rambling Report 22 Jun 2011 13:45

I think that's true Teresa, there are some very long running threads that are not in the least cliquey but just so 'established' it would be hard for a newbie to jump in on...I realise that I don't add to them myself lol, even though I know most of the people on them to some extent.

Part of that is lack of time to read through and 'catch up', and it's easier ( for me) to pop on and post on 'topic' threads or post my own ramblings.

And I would say to newbies if you do feel like posting your own thread ( maybe because a topic you are interested in isn't on here or just to say hello ) it is often a better way of getting to know people..... 'we' then have to come to 'you' lol
:-D

Hi

Thank you for your comments

Some of you seem to doubt that there were occasions when I was told to not post because I was not British ......... let me say that most of those messages were posted in the early hours of the morning.

Same for at least one down under member who was told the same thing.

I tried to give the posters the benefit of the doubt as to whether they were drunk or just plain discriminatory against overseas members

But it is also probable that the messages were removed before most people were up in the UK, or were on threads that slipped off the front page, or did not attract your attention ......... I did not go back to check after the first reading. Why upset myself a second time?

I chalked it up to experience, and an inward promise to myself to avoid that poster.

Uggers

..... I was born in Britain. I left in 1967, and have been a naturalized Canadian since 1974.

Britain to me now is a place to visit as a tourist ................. but that does not mean that I do not have an interest in what happens in the UK, politically or otherwise. Just as I have a great interest in a number of other countries, especially ones that we have lived in or visited for extended lengths of time.

I may be getting older, but my brain is still engaged! :-D

Robin, not everyone can agree all the time and sometimes it is going to get a bit heated. Yes there have been some awful things said, personal things about some members, and things that nobody ever had any right to say, but hopefully that's all in the past now and we've all moved on.

Sylvia, I wasn't doubting you, I was just surprised as I've never seen it myself. As you say, if it was in the early ours our time, then I'm not suprised, there were many nights where there were some gin-soaked comments made that were removed by morning. :-\

Teresa

a lot of unwise comments were made in those wee small hours!

And there are still some even now!

Unfortunately, that is when most of the overseas members are round and about, so we see rather more of the "bad behaviour" fuelled by alcohol.

we also do a lot of talking to ourselves as well!! ;-)

Hopefully, as someone said, the combining of the two boards will help

Me too Robin7, it was all getting too personal, way beyond a difference of opinion lol

But that's all in the past now, and shouldn't be resurrected. That won't help us get the newbies to join in....

ButtercupFields Report 22 Jun 2011 21:11

Robin when I first joined a long long time ago, there was a huge row going on here and my head was nearly snapped off when I ventured an opinion....but here I still am :-D :-D

Mind you there is an over 50s site whose name I wont mention and the rows...well they call them debates...are something to behold. Imagine a sea of piranha fish all ready to bite each others heads off! :-D

Uggers Report 22 Jun 2011 21:13

Sorry Sylvia, I didn't mean it sound like I didn't believe you've experienced it - I don't think it happens a lot but (especially as I used to be on here a lot in our wee hours) I think I've seen probably every sort of prejudice expressed on these boards and that isn't one that sticks in my mind.

I've also seen people suggesting that there's a British attitude against them when there hasn't been so, like other prejudices, it doesn't always exist just because it's claimed.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Jun 2011 21:42

Hi Uggers

oh, there was no doubt about the way it was expressed to me!

and also to the other person I mentioned, who is not a Canadian.

There wasn't any misunderstanding in our meaning of what was said........... and it was said at different times, under different circumstances, to people from 2 different countries.

Hopefully, as you say, it didn't happen often, and hopefully, it won't happen again .............. although sometimes I do have my doubts about that!

AnninGlos Report 22 Jun 2011 22:13

Have to say this Rose. After you said about long running threads that could appear cliquey I changed the heading on the craft one slightly and re-wrote the first poat, thatw as early this evening. Since then I have been pleased to see two new people on the thread. So there might be something in what you say. Not that we can change the titles of all long running threads (Daff's thread springs to mind). But maybe some could be tweaked.

Rambling

Rambling Report 22 Jun 2011 22:41

Hi Ann, it's good that you have two new posters on the thread.

It wasn't one of the threads I'd thought of to be honest, as it is specific to crafters or those interested to read about those 'who can' lol. As such i wouldn't think anyone could see it as cliquey just 'subject led' so to speak :-)

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 22 Jun 2011 23:18

No I didn't have that one in mind either when I mentioned thread titles. But, it goes to prove a point maybe?

Susan10146857 Report 23 Jun 2011 01:01

I have just read Sylvias posts

That is disgusting and nobody should have ever said anything of the sort. I wou
Ld hope that any of us who saw such discrimination would have said something about it.

Was this by PM Sylvia or on the boards?......I know I have seen some vile postings in my time but not of the nature you describe.

As for upsetting the 'Brits'. Whoever said such a thing is soooo wrong.

None of us own these boards......The only reason that I would personally 'Have a go' is if someone was being unfair or down right rude......and it wouldn't matter to me which country they came from.......Other than that.......well, it is downright rude for us to be any different......There are the same rules in life for everybody.

I know for a fact that some of us have given the benefit of the doubt to a couple of members.....giving them more Lee way than perhaps we should have......but....that is life.

Please don't look upon wind up merchants as how Us in the UK are.......just like yourself....we are all characters who need Lee way now and then.......The Overseas persons who have ever got my goat.......I
Look apon them as just that.......a person who has peeved me.....nothing whatsoever to do with their nationality.

So I ask you not to judge us by nationality either. These boards belong to us all. :-)

BC

no worries!

Susan

it was on the open boards of Chat, but early in the morning UK time.

and, no, I don't judge anyone by nationality by any means

................. but I am finally speaking out about it as I believe that discrimination of any kind is wrong, and this most definitely was a type of discrimination

I don't judge anyone on looks, or the way they talk or whatever ............... I judge people based on my experience with them.

That's the way I was raised, and that's the way I've always behaved.

sylvia

ps ............. I knew there was a reason I was still clinging to my desktop! :-)
