As I was tidying my new room for my computer etc we had to move various other peces of furniture arond. Lo and behold this fell out of one of the drawers so thought it was telling me to add it on here. I hope that you enjoy it.

Dear Lord, to Thee my knee is bent.--
Give me content--
Full-pleasured with what comes to me,
What e'er it be:
An humble roof--a frugal board,
And simple hoard;
The wintry fagot piled beside
The chimney wide,
While the enwreathing flames up-sprout
And twine about
The brazen dogs that guard my hearth
And household worth:
Tinge with the ember's ruddy glow
The rafters low;
And let the sparks snap with delight,
As ringers might
That mark deft measures of some tune
The children croon:
Then, with good friends, the rarest few
Thou holdest true,
Ranged round about the blaze, to share
My comfort there,--
Give me to claim the service meet
That makes each seat
A place of honor, and each guest
Loved as the rest.

I do realise that it is talking about the winter months so will try to think of a summer verse or saying

Spanish Eyes, I have enjoyed your poem very much, and I'm on the look out for another one to add.

The minute you start talking about what you are going to do if you lose, you have lost already.

Nigglynellie, pleased that you like the poem.

Dermot, I enjoy the "truths" that you manage to either find or know already.

As promised earlier, a poem about summer.

A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson (1885)

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic spider-clad
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy’s inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.

That is a really lovely poem Spanish Eyes. I found this one wich I would like to share:

The Cradle Song by W.B.Yeats.

The Angels are stooping
Above your bed;
They weary of trooping
With the whimpering dead.

God's laughing in heaven
To see you so good;
The Shining Seven
Are gay with His mood.

I kiss you and kiss you,
My pigeon, my own;
Ah, how I shall miss you
When you are grown.

Some of you will be aware that the partner of one of my sons' has lost the child they were so looking forward to.
I looked for words to show my feelings about them and their loss and came upon this. Therefore I cannot say it is a favourote bur it struck a chord for me. I send this in respect of son and partner.

Our Angel Baby

We never got to see your eyes,
or hold your hand, or hear your cries.
All wehave are dreams of you,
those of which, will never come true.
Our hearts sank the day that we knew,
We would never get to meet you.
IWe had made plans, and had aspirations,
if only we had a little more patience.
We never thought the Lord would take you
away from me so soon.
But, we will never forget that dismal day,
around the late afternoon.
The day we knew something was not right,
and through many tears we would fight.
Now, all we do is dream at night,
about what life would have been like.
What if you really had been born?
But all we have a dreams of that,
and all we can do is mourn.
We will not mourn for you though,
because we know you're where you need to be,
even though it isn't here with us.
You are our angel baby because God wanted you with Him.
Now, forever with his angels, His praises you will sing.
None of our dreams for you will ever come true,
because of that day God chose to take you.
But, our angel baby you will always be,
in our hearts forever, forever a part of our family.

Oh dear Spanish Eyes, I'm so VERY sorry to hear of your families loss. What a tragedy for you all to have to bear. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this unhappy time.

Thank you nigglynellie.

As a family we have accepted what has happened, and hope that sometime later this year we may have more joyful news. People have been so kind, as usual when any of us are having a difficult time, it is as if we keep eachother in our hearts.

Dermot, Please keep your one liners, I think they are great.

As well as loving your enemies, try treating your friends a little bit better.

Dermot, how did I miss the saying, it is oh so true, we do generally speaking tend to be grateful for good friends but do not always tell them how much we appreciate them.

Today I am adding a few sayings and will rack my brains to see what I can find to celebrate the longest day of the year. If this is successful I will be back today.

1.growing old is like being increasingly penalised for a crime you have't committed. Anthony Powell.
2. Middle age is when you are sitting at homevon Saturdaynight and the telephone rings and you hope it isn't for you. Ogden Nash
3. Simply had to add this one and you will see why!
I first felt old walking in Spain with my 13 year old daughter when I belatedly realised that the wolf-whistle was not for me!!
4. The best anti-ageing cream is ice cream. What other food makes you feel 8 years old again.

These are all from I little book " A Good Old Laugh!"

I wil try to find a few more. :-D

Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things. Yet, look what they can achieve when they stick together.

Allegations have been made against us. We must find the alligators!!

LilyL

LilyL Report 21 Jun 2011 14:46

I've just found this which I rather liked. 'In the Snow' by W.H Davis.

Hear how my friend the Robin sings!
That little hunchback in the snow,
As it comes down as fast as rain.
The air is cold, the wind doth blow,
And still his heart can feel no pain.

And I with heart as light as his,
And to my ankles deep in snow,
Hold up a fist as cold as Death's,
And into it I laugh and blow -
I laugh and blow my life's warm breath.

Feel a bit sad at the moment, our swallows, who come back year after year had built their nest and babies had hatched; when the weather was SO bad last W/end they deserted the nest and the babies died. We haven't seen sight or sound of the parents since and wonder if they too perished in the storms, or perhaps they starved as there have been no insects to speak of owing to the cold and wet.

We don't seem to have any postings any more Spanish Eyes; it's a pity as I have really enjoyed belonging to this thread, but I suppose all good things have to come to an end. I shall miss it!

Don't ask:-

*how did he die, but how did he live;
*not what did he gain, but what did he give;
*not what was his church nor what was his creed;
*but had he befriended those really in need;
*not what the newspaper sketch say;
*but how many were sorry when he passed away;

These are the units to measure the worth of a man as a man,
regardless of his birth.
