it's very sad that you can rarely walk into an church these days unless it is to a service.

I used to pop into churches when out and about somewhere, to look at the building itself but also to have a quiet word ... in a place where the comforting atmosphere of ages had built up.

Add an 'I think that: '...if you wish. Doesn't have to be on the same topic :)

I think its sad that we watch everyone like they are a criminal these days and they watch us like we are too x

Sad indeed. Vandalism & theft are often the reasons that doors are bolted against the casual visitor.

In some parts of Devon though, churches have organised a rota of parishioners consisting of two or three individuals (mainly retired) who are free & happy to keep watch for a few hours most days. This means that access is available for at least a little while each day.

I think I am lucky ...that the little village church is not locked, and I can go in whenever I like.I am not religious but there is something about being in a church when there is no-one else.I love the peace, and can't explain the feeling I have when I am in there.I can either wander around or just sit and ponder.I love it.

Burglary is the main reason...and the cost of insurance is high!

I know of a church where even the aisle carpet was rolled up and taken! Clocks, chairs, silverware....anything moveable. Nothing is sacred to many thieves. Lead flashings on the church roof is a favourite too!

Some do run a rota system especially at weekends and our church is open on Fridays because a luncheon club is held in a side room. It's quite common for folk to sit quietly in church either before or after they have their meal.

Sad times indeed. Cx

Like Dermot stated, many churches in Devon and Cornwall are open, but on reflection whenever we went in it did not seem long before a churchwarden, lady doing flowers, organist appeared, we must look dodgy ha ha..
