Oh well, if you must. The transubstantiation takes the form of pigs toenails and cheese cubes every Sunday lunchtime, washed down with a fine Glenmorangie so that will help take the taste of the lager away.

Well done! Now you are free of that millstone, you can start to enjoy life a bit. You may, however, wish to take up the following of the Rev. John Smith and his disciples in the Temple of the Frog and Donkey, where a warm welcome is given by the victualler. As opposed to vicar.

Eldrick Report 29 Jul 2010 16:20

Waders you mean. Leather ones, of course.

Yes, but times move on and advances mean we understand things better. People a thousand years ago didnt know that if you made a wing to a design with the airflow going the long way over the top of the wing meant that the air pressure was lessened compared to below the wing and therefore it would stay in the air - add thrust and bingo, it's powered flight. A simple invention or discovery can revolutionise peoples lives. Electricity, harnessing radioactivity, radio waves - these things were worked out by people, not some supernatural entity. The work goes on, but it's science, not paranormal superstitious nonsense that brings things to fruition.

We can only guess at things to come, but we won't hold them in superstitious awe, because the principles are there to be explained and understood.

Yes, I'm sure there is some evidence of stories from the bible, some of them are probably true, or at least have a basis in truth. I query the walking on water and water to wine bits, though. Penn and Teller do them better than the guy in sandals. The bit about the psycho father about to cut his sons throat cos he had a voice in his head may be true - who knows. He's damned lucky he didnt have social services or the CSA after him after that little escapade. Imagine it happening now.....? But because it was a long time ago, it seems to be OK - a sign of goodness even. Yeah, whatever.

The thing is, people tend to pick and choose the bits they like from the bible, and explain the other bits away as being allegorical or not relevant. Well, either it's the bible or it isn't is my view! Interesting historical text, altered and changed over the years to suit whatever purpose, but still interesting as an insight into the lives and mindset of people in days gone by. But hardly a document to live ones life by, I wouldn't have thought. A pretty miserable life it must be for anyone who takes it as gospel (little play on words there - did you like it?)

:-)

The Wonders of Evolution.
Many children's stories and books have addressed the idea of biblical creation, but the number of works written to acquaint youngsters with the extraordinary and continuing process of natural evolution has been few.The Tree of Life shares the excitement and the beauty of evolution in an easy-to-read and fun manner. From the ocean's microscopic life to amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, insects, birds, animals, and the first humans, author Ellen Jackson celebrates the marvels of evolution in a way that encourages young children to appreciate its significance. The lavish illustrations by Judeanne Winter Wiley capture the wonders of evolution, from its first "beginning to be" forms to species that characterize the world as we know it.

read it.

No, but they are reproducable and explainable and more importantly, they exist. You need to ask the question - which is more likely?

Did a supreme being start waving his hands around and create absolutely everying there is and ever has been and still retain the power to know what you as an individual think and believe....for which there is no evidence at all......

Or was it a totally natural process that is ongoing even to hteis day, for which there IS evidence. Lots of it.

It's not expainable in a message board arena, it's something you have to find out for yourself. And when you do understand and appreciate it, it's a million times more powerful and exciting, wonderful, mysterious and fascinating than any old myth about some figment of someones imagination. It's worth the effort, it really is.

Sadly, the faithful are content by and large to deny the wonders of nature and evolution and instead continue to subscribe to the notion of an omnipotent all seeing god and to ignore all the problems that go with that theory. But we're geting there, slowly but surely. Its not that long ago that people almost universally believed in creation by a god, now it's a tiny proportion of that number. Natural selection tells us that common sense will prevail, although it may take a heck of a long time yet.

Most amino acids, often called "the building blocks of life", can form via natural chemical reactions unrelated to life

but how did they get there.?

n modern, still somewhat limited understanding, the first living things on Earth are thought to be single cell prokaryotes (which lack a cell nucleus), perhaps evolved from protobionts (organic molecules surrounded by a membrane-like structure)

it says perhaps? The oldest ancient fossil microbe-like objects are dated to be 3.5 Ga (billion years old), approximately one billion years after the formation of the Earth itself.

approximatley?

see there not definates ,same as the bible
