i hear ya muff, and can see where your coming from.but i hate unfairness in any shape and form.i believe its good to treat everyone the same in our country ,but when our countrys at risk at the moment safety does come first .in saying that just because 2 guys go around shooting folks does,nt mean to say guns should be banned .

Feel torn on this tbh.

I don't like seeing women wearing the burka...on so many levels BUT it's a slippery slope...once you ban that...who knows what other limitations could come after?

I'm all for the small state ... I totally understand the integration and security issues..but..can't decide whether or not they're worth the risk of increasing infringements once that decision is set as a precidence.

Tricky one x

So, did anyone read it? - the article that I mentioned - http://www.q-news.com/media-DailyMail-Burka.htm

These things only really become a problem when you become faced with them.
I worked night shift in a 24 hour garage so anyone with a crash helmet, balaclava, hoodie etc was given short shrift as you can't take the risk.

Burka..........tricky one as you could be accused of breaking race relations laws by refusing them access while on the other hand you could be reprimanded for ignoring company policy which requires you to be aware of who you allow in the shop.

I can assure you that shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes !

Ann o' GG -- are you really meaning to call citizens of your country "visitors"?

Are they visitors because they were born somewhere else?

Does this apply to everyone born somewhere else?

How about immigrants from, oh, Australia, who are Roman Catholic? The state religion in England is CofE. I think maybe they should be banned from wearing crucifixes in public. When in, er, Rome, do as the Romans?

Let me try again, Jupiter Joy.

What does it matter how things are done in other countries, when you are deciding how to do things in your own?

There is no public health care in the US. Does that mean you shouldn't have it?

There are rules about how women dress in Dubai. Does that mean the UK should have rules about how women dress?

See how that works?
Banning the burqa is **a rule about how women dress**.

If you don't think there should be rules about how YOU dress, where you live -- and I really think you do not want to have rules about how YOU dress -- how come you think it's okay to have rules about how someone else dresses?

I will have to repeat what I repeatedly say: IF there is some good reason for making rules about how people dress, fine and good.

"Because they do it there" is not a good reason.

And the fact that something "annoys a lot of people" is really really really NOT a good reason.

Good lord, just think of all the things I could get banned if it were.

I'm just wondering whether any of us would be really that interested in what they wear if it wasn't for the media frenzy.

I very much believe in the "When in Rome do as the Romans do" - I would not visit a country where people are stoned to death so I would not have to abide by their rules. If I am a visitor in another country I will abide by their rules - if their rules are alien to me I will not visit their country - simple as.

I would never go to Turkey for instance - they allow torture of bears for entertainment - not civilised that!!

i dont agree with what they get up to but dress sense its your choice to visit, i would love to sit in a mud hut and eat a traditional dish on the floor and never come home , no washing up ironing hoovering , but i wonder when the making of babies season starts and there is no bedrooms what happens, cause i couldnt be doing with people watching xx

Hey ho, burkas schmurkas.

Rather than ban this that and the other, just ban all religion. Problem solved. As if that wonderful situation would ever arise!

But seriously, all this talk about terrorism, security and so on is pretty much wide of the mark. People who have stupid beliefs should be allowed to wear stupid clothes. Of course, it's my prerogative to think someone elses 'beliefs' are stupid, same as it's my prerogative to think their clothes are stupid, as they are equally entitled to think my clothes or whatever are stupid. At least no one can say my beliefs are stupid - I dont believe in any supernatural nonsense, so there we go.

I hate bans. Detest them. They don't work and all they do is criminalise otherwise law abiding people for the sins of a tiny few.

hi george, bearing in mind how high risk we are.and the security aspect ,that should be enough reason to not cover your face.ann pointed out a reason for this.
and again if all of us were to cover our faces then what....would that be ok ,when in a bank or an airport etc.just pointing this in another direction.xx

Foggy

Foggy Report 18 Jul 2010 19:47

I could care less about women wearing a burka if a woman wants to wear one, but if they are forced in any way that is a no no.
I do believe that if requested to show their faces, say in a bank or where recognition is important, then they should.
I personally would want to see the person I was talking to, not just a pair of eyes.

I think it's true that it would be un british, our history is all about having people from different countries and cultures come here and mingle with us and that all adds to make us what we are now. I don't agree with the when in Rome thing because I wouldn't go to another country and join in with stoning adulterers or having anything to do with young kids working in factories etc. Accepting different beliefs and ways of life is what makes this country so good
