Hello all, morning and evening. Promising to be another nice day here. Allan's weather does move across the continent but seems to slip south and usually bypasses this part of the world, although our latitude is similar to Perth. Allan I think is south of Perth while one of the Sues lives east.
Spending too much time on my Ancestry tree but today will be an ancestry-free day. Gives me time to catch up on a couple of GR threads.
I am not good at making jokes. Cringe at some of Allan's and Tec's. Some are very old. I used to have a book called "The Table In A Roar", inherited from my grandfather and probably published in the 20s. I am not sure whether In Seine is that old but I was still in short pants when I first heard it, and I haven't worn shorts since I was 15.
The first riddle I remember is "Constantinople is a very long word but I can spell it in two letters". Will not bore you with the solution.

Had a great night. The only downfall was that it was in a room with no windows!! So fifty or so people it got a little heated..Meal was nice soup to start with roast dinner and then a selection of cakes..We all had three readings..1st one was numerology working with my birthdate, very interesting. 2nd one was tarot cards which was quite accurate. 3rd one was like a medium of sorts where i am headed and sort forth and a couple of messages.
I go there with an open mind to these things I have an interest but have to say I do take it with a pinch of salt.
All in all a good night with some lovely friends.

Yep South of Perth in Australind. About 170 kms from there. Nearest 'large'
City is Bunbury, about 10 kms further South. We are virtually a suburb ot Bunbury, but in a different local government area.

Janet, As i said in an earlier post, my sincere apologise to you. I missed out a word and it seemed that I was wishing that your dinner would be postponed. I'm glad that it wasn't and that you had a good time.

Colin, I think the answer to your Constantinople riddle is "IT" . Any prize for the correct answer?

Hope the sausage sizzle at Bunnings went well, SueMaid. They are very hard to resist and I'm sure some people only go for the food and don't even go inside the shop! I have to pop up to our local one soon, But I've just eaten my lunch so will be able to resist - maybe.....
Janet, we had the hail in our part of Perth too - certainly has been a wild morning.
Some neighbours have sold their house and moving up to the hills, so I have invited them over for some farewell drinks this evening. So I must be off now to buy a few drinks and nibbles. I will miss them as they were always friendly and helpful. It's a shame to lose good neighbours.

Good morning one and all. I am bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning after a good nights sleep. Well I am awake at any rate!

It was interesting to think back to the winters of my childhood, which were much more severe than now. We hardly get any snow now and it is so mild in comparison. When I was very young we lived in a terraced house with back yard. Not yard as in garden as used by our Aussie friends, but a concrete yard with high walls around it, The only toilet was at the bottom of the yard,so you had to go outside in all weathers. There was a paraffin heater in there to stop the pipes freezing up in the winter. The smell of paraffin immediately takes me back to my early days.

I can remember one year dad having to climb out of the kitchen window to get into the yard and dig a path out so we could get to the toilet. He couldn't open the door because oddly it opened outwards, so the weight of the snow on it meant that it couldn't be opened.

Good morning, Linda. I just read your post to my OH and he said that's exactly what he remembers when he lived in Bath Place Stockton. There was a toilet and a coal house in the yard. The neighbour next door had a shop owned by a woman called Meggy Dunn. He said he used to climb the high wall and pinch bottles of lemonade from the shop's yard.

Lol Sue, I laughed at your OH stealing Lemonade, how naughty.

One one side of us the neighbours were a nasty couple, who had a viscous boxer dog. They deliberately put the kennel up against the yard wall. Whenever anyone came into the yard, it would jump up on top of the kennel and it could get its paws on the top of the wall and look over. It barked and snarled and I was frightened to go across the yard on my own. I suppose that is where my life long hatred of dogs stems from.

The house was odd because although it was a typical terrace with the back lane behind the yard, it had a different arrangement on the front. There was a very small front garden, but no road in front of that, just a footpath. On the opposite side where you might expect more houses, there weren't any, instead the land was divided into gardens which belonged to the houses. My father was a keen gardener and used to grow all of the veg there.

About five years ago, I went back and found the house and the person who owned it now happened to be in the garden,so I asked his permission to take a photo. He told me that the nasty neighbours had lived there for many years and were universally disliked. His wife appeared and we had a chat, I was hoping that they mights ask me in, but sadly they didn't

OH is hovering and trying to chivvy me up so that we can walk down to the market square to buy the fruit etc, so I had better go.

the thread brightens my day - every day - thank you for it.

Linda......... I also lived in a terraced house in South East England when I was young. The outside loo was inside a lean-to built onto the back of the house - cold, dark, and full of spiders.
When I was three years old, the war was still on, and the area was being bombarded with flying bombs, or "Doodle Bugs" as they were known.
One Sunday morning my mother left me sitting on the loo while she went indoors. Suddenly, and without warning a flying bomb hit the house next door but one, sadly killing the elderly couple that lived there. The back of our house was badly damaged, and the wooden lean-to, and the loo was blown off the house.
My mother couldn't get out of the house because of the damage.
When she did get out after the dust had settled, there was obviously no sign of me or the loo.
She and neighbours eventually found me 30 feet up the garden, under a pile of rubble - when they unburied me, I was incredibly still on the loo, but was wedged down inside it, and it had to be smashed to get me out.
I was not badly injured, but apparently did not speak, or make a sound for ten weeks after.
Obviously, I remember nothing of this, but the story is a legend in the family.
