I will hang my head in shame for the family I married into - during the Civil War when the Roundheads had taken yet again the town they lived in. It is recorded that from the pulpit a brother minister who lived close by was urging on the soldiers who were desecrating the church!

It was OH's direct ancestor - there was not another minister about. The shame of it and OH a choirboy as was his father afore him. Hope their singing paid off the sins of their forefather!

So if I've got this right now, It was either Charles 2, or Baron Monck, hiding up the Oak Tree?

Well William got the throne cos he was married to James' daughter ~ aint sure but think it was Mary who continued to reign after his death then her sister Anne took over x Anne was last of English Monarchs n 1st of British Monarchs x

Have to admit - do not know a lot about James apart from the fact he had a battle with William - 1690 and the Battle of the Boyne. He popped his clogs and there we are with William of Orange and little anglicans again!

Oh yes, now eeeevrybody wants in on the Monck action.

Dropped the 'c' and became common. Hmph. No Monks in my tree.

No Moncks either, actually. Although we cling to the tale of the black sheep younger brother of the Viscount. And nothing I have found disproves it! In fact, the Viscount's younger brother was killed at Alma, a mere few weeks before my gr-grfather's younger sister (later actress) was born in Plymouth ...

No, you may not share my illustrious mythical ancestors. ;)

Mel - Charles was a fop in miniature - Charles II was everything his daddy was not - tall, goodlooking, ladies loved him and with his dying breath - he asked them to take careof Nellie!!!!

His brother James inherited and he had embraced his mother's religion and here we are again!

Charles I was anglican but his wife Henrieta Maria was french and catholic - a strong minded woman whilst Charles was weak. Somehow or other that reminds me of another couple!!!!
