My opinion is:

did jesus exist? very likely but probably not quite as portrayed on the telly/film.

is there life after death? no, not in my opinion.

who wrote the bible? a collector of tales, who decided to be the equivalent of Enid Blyton in the age applicable and copied down all the legends doing the rounds at the time.

do ghouts exist? Very probably, but I personally do not know of any nor have I any proof that they do.

is there life on other planets? why not? seems logical if the planet can sustain life as we know it.

what does the moon smell like? Very ripe Brie I imagine - I have neither been there, nor had the smell of it, so it's really had to say. it could smell of Pine Disinfectant for all I know.

how high is cloud nine? Higher than Cloud 8?

how many sheep were there in noahs ark? Two I imagine, one of each sex unless the Enid Blyton of the day was telling porkies.

I do believe in life in other parts of the universe - I don't think that with the amount of stars out there that have orbital planets that ours could be the only one fortunate enough to have exactly the right conditions to sustain life. That's probably the biggest unexplained thing I believe in.

Going on a bit (and I can go on about this subject, believe me!), whether those inhabitants have developed the scientific knowledge to travel the immense distances to arrive at our little rock is another matter.

We've only had powered "heavier than air" flight for about 106 years and the furthest we've got a man is the moon (although some people still question that achievement) so we have many decades, if not centuries, of further scientific advancement before we even break out of the solar system - if we last as a species that long.

And there's the rub - does scientific advancement go hand-in-hand with the self-desctruction of the species or its natural environment? Have other alien societies blasted themselves into oblivion either through war or by destroying their planet before developing the knowledge of inter-stellar travel?

As to what the moon smells like - until someone takes off the helmet to their space suit on the moon nobody will ever know. Then they'll not know for very long ...

Ah Derek - our world never rested on the shoulders of Atlas - Atlas was a Titan sentenced to hold up the sky by Zeus for his part in the war against the Gods. The classical art depicts him holding up a celestial sphere, not the Earth (remember, in those days everyone believed the Earth was flat).

But do all parts of the moon smell the same Trinity? Not all parts of the Earth smell the same.

Gunpowder (black powder - not nitro powder) consists of potassium nitrate(salpetre), sulphur and charcoal (carbon). It could also be described as smelling like urine - which was used in the middle ages to provide the potassium component. So no wonder moon dust smells like gunpowder!

And to say that a certain number of animals went onto Noahs ark is accepting that the story is true. Emphasis on the word 'story'.

There's almost certainly life on planets in our galaxy. So far over 300 planets have been discovered orbiting other stars. But so far bar 1 these are all large gas giants, whose orbits are are inhospitable to life The one rocky planet (about twice the size of earth) is much to close to its parent star for life.
With advancements in technology, later space telescopes will be able to detect smaller earth sized planets.

With some 300 to 400 billion star in our own milky way it is inevitable that there will planets that can sustain life. lets say 0.05% of these stars has a habitable planet, thats 200 million planets. And on 0.05 % of those planets evolved intelligent life = 100,000 planets with intelligent life.

But even if there were that many stars with a planet with intelligent life. Thats 1 star in 4,000,000 & so on average they would be 100s of light year apart & may never know of each others existance.

And if we ever do venture to the stars. Who knows, we could be the 1st ones in our galaxy to do so & we'd be the aliens.

Which brings me onto a broader question - what is an alien?
