Muffy - he never went for my throat!! I was only concerned as he had been used for hunting and I was playing the part of 'prey' - there was the possibility - but he knew the difference - hence he ran into me until I taught him to jump! He went to a family with very young children when dad came back to UK and was really gentle. Personally I think they're more intelligent than they make out and a life of lazing around is heaven!
Shamaal was meant to sleep in the hall, but my bedroom with it's air conditioning was much more to his liking, and he found the bed nice and soft....He taught himself to open the door in less than a week!
(mum & dad were a bit more strict with him)

Blimey Cat............I'm not that sensitive hon.......I was just thinking out loud.........honest...............I put this thread up to hear the pros and the cons........and I'll listen to both points of view cos I take it seriously lol.

Please don't think I was being defensive cos I wasn't..........if i was making a huge boo boo I'd appreciate the heads up ...........I really would !!!!

Sorry, Muffy, didn't mean to imply you wouldn't. I realise from earlier posts and other threads you've had dogs for several years, if not most of your life. I know you wouldn't just pick a dog and take it home.

I would visit and make sure I had the right one before I even considered bringing her home...........

I don't take on any dog easily........when they come to my home they're here for life and become my family.

I hadn't even considered any type of hound before........but there is something about this breed that appeals.

I'll do some more research..........I'm not 40 yet til NEXT YEAR lol......plenty of time........

That's it when you have young kids. You have to be extra careful when choosing a dog. It's one of the reasons why I waited until mine were older.

hmmmmmmmmm not sure I like the sound of going for your throat........cos I have young kids.............

BUT from what I have read they appear to be in the main, docile and gentle dogs..........so I guess I will just have to be careful that I buy a *pet* rather than a *worker*

There are some gorgeous ones crossed with greyhounds.........another breed which I love.

I won't be rushing into it........as it's a decision I will live with for the life of the dog..............but I just think they are sooooooooooo beautiful .........the one I saw today had kindness seeping out of every pore.

Just remembered a game we used to play. I'd run around the garden, chased by Shamaal (bit dodgy considering how they catch gazelle etc), then I'd stop suddenly, crouch down and see if he'd jump over me or run into me - or go for my throat LOL He usually ran into me - unless I shouted 'Jump'.
We also used to play 'splat the ant'.
Whenever he was fed, there would be a procession of giant ants from the garden to his food bowl and back again. Once he had finished, I would count the ants '1,2,3, splat!' He would splat the ant!!

I'm not saying there's not a lot for a teenager to do in Saudi Arabia.........
......but I took my entertainment where I could find it!

I wouldn't rule a young rescue out to be honest............I am more than willing to work on her........... xx

Muffy, I know someone who has a rescue Saluki - it is possible!
She's not golden/white, and is a bit nervous of strangers - the alternative to Shamaal's aggresion towards arabs LOL - but a beautiful nature within the family, and once you get to know her, she accepts you.

I want a white one..............though they appear to be the most expensive........I'd love to get one and call her *ghost*

Though I'll settle for a dif colour as cost is a factor in this.

They are just sooooooooooo beautiful and the one I saw today had such a lovely personality..........with her doe eyes and dopey smile...............

Dad came home to England and didn't know what to do with him - didn't want to leave him in kennels for 6 months, wasn't sure how he'd be with other people. In the end he gave him to a family with small children - and he loved them as much as they loved him! By now he had been neutered - not that he was a particularly 'feisty' dog before!
King Faisal was assasinated in 1976 - he was too liberal for many - he was a lovely man.
Don't know if Faisal's sons still breed Saluki's - I expect they do - and they're all descendants of Shamaal - who was a golden Saluki - the original!!!

WOW...........what a dog !!!!

I've dealt with rage syndrome in spaniels.........and have had some real loopy lou rescue dogs..........Salukis sound like my kind of dog !!!

My old lady collie.........sadly now not with us.........wouldn't do a thing unless you said please.

OH would go berserk and say it was outrageous to have to beg a dog to do as she's told but she stood firm..........unless you said please.......you had no chance.

You're not going to belive this, but I'm going to tell you anyway.

My dad lived in Saudi Arabia in the 1970's. He wanted to get a Saluki - bearing in mind that's where the breed comes from. There was one very good breeder at the time - King Faisal. Dad asked if he could buy one of his dogs - the answer was yes! Dad went along, chose his dog and waited until he was old enough to be taken form his mother.
When the puppies were weaned, they were put in a nursey - all pups together. Dad's dog then proceeded to kill all the other male puppies!

King Faisal was very impressed by this dog - but had promised it to my dad, so kept his promise, but asked dad not to get him neutered until he had mated with some of his (Faisal's) bitches.
I went out to join my parents in 1973. By then dad's dog, Shamaal (this means North wind - or turn left!!) was 2 and due for a session at the kennels. We took him along - and had tea with King Faisal while Shamaal 'performed'.

He was a lovely dog - the only problem was.........he hated arabs!! LOL (not helped by the pr*t who built a mound outside the 12 ft high walls so he could throw stones at me!)

When a workman came to the house, you had to stand there and say 'okay' to him, and he would leave them alone. If you didn't say 'okay' - eg if they went out to the van for something and walked back into the garden without one of us saying 'okay' - he would attack!!
He managed to kill at least one donkey and ripped the buttock out of a potential thief. - the first shriek of a workman we would be out screaming 'Okay' at Shamaal LOL
Every time I tried to take a photograph of this wonderful creature, he would slide down the wall - exhausted from doing nothing!!

I arrived home one morning at 3am after a party. Parents had locked the gate and left Shamaal in the garden. I made my escort (Scots lad) climb over the wall first - he was nearly killed - Shamaal nearly drowned him in saliva - nearly licked him to death!
We then took the dog for a walk - me holding his rope. Shamaal's reputation went before him. Any threat (and there were lots) that was headed my way, I just let a bit more rope loose. very satisfying - and very illegal!! Women weren't allowed to walk dogs - let alone Saluki's - which were above the station of 'dog'.
Wonderful dogs - loyal, protective, know which side their breads buttered - not the sharpest tools in the box though!!!!
