Big News I am the big 70 on Monday and it looks as if I will have to postpone my trip as I have been informed that some members of my family have bought me a return flight to go and visit my family in Rockhampton on the 20th of May.Very Nice so I will put my car trip off until the end of June.

Hi all ,just a quicky before i load the car with our washing and take it to the sons,yeeees,it happened as i knew it would ,our hoover died yesterday morning as it started the second spin.
Poor old thing lasted well ,12 years plus ,and never anything going wrong in that time,anyway it's funeral will be tomorrow when the scrap man calls,but the new one will take two weeks to come,and the sons will be taking it in turns to do our washing till then.
We have done thier washing too many times to count ,our machine being overloaded with it as well ,which has shortened it's life no doubt..
Nearly finished restoring the last standby computer ,the cd roms won't operate ,so i reckon i need to reinstall the hardware wizard driver,but to make sure i will plug in the verbatime ex' drive first to see if the wizard picks it up,and if it does all i need to do is disconnect the roms ,reboot the computer ,turn it back off and reconnect them one at a time,if that dosn't work HEEEEEELP lol.
Think i need to go and start the dinner ,a nice chuck ,stuffing ,roast potatoes ,parsnip and peppers ,with new and mashed potato's and carrot,and cabbage ,[steamed ] and a nice thick gravy at the grandsons request.

Oh yes . . I saw the shop in Tuncurry today . . didn't know it was your daughter Marie . . but noticed it as I hadn't seen it before.

We used to live just behind the Tuncurry Mall, before the Mall was there.

We called into Tuncurry to put flowers on mum's grave for Mothers Day on our way back from meeting up with our son for the weekend at Kempsey (didn't get to South West Rocks after all). Then went and had lunch down near the breakwall.

Also Marie . . I lived in Rocky too . . .
TLR (Thats my hubby, stands for The Lovely Ray) is a Rocky boy, we met and married while in the Navy and went back there to live after TLR payed off. Stayed 5yrs too long . teeheee
TLR's family all still live up there - we usually go up for New Year for him to visit his mum. Really sesible isn't it to go up at the hottest time :)

CG . . so sorry to hear that your job is not looking too secure . . thoughts are with you.

Hello Wattlers. Can anyone help me? I was wondering if anyone lived in Hobart or knew someone who lived in Hobart and could go to the registry office for me. I'm presuming Hobart is the office I need. I'm trying to locate a death certificate for someone who died after 1851. I'm looking for it for a lady in England. Unfortunately, Tasmania does have the funds to go on-line with all of that yet. I can't find a death certificate in any other state. We believe that if there is one it would most likely be in TAS becaue the man in question was a convict who was sent there although he did move around a bit. If anyone can help I'll then pass on the details as I know them.

Having a day off work today, as i needed to replace me dear ol mums guttering and down pipes before the real winter sets in.

A PENAL COLONY.

N.S.W ( New South Wales )
In 1788, the eleven ships of the First Fleet landed their 'cargo' of around 780 British convicts at Botany Bay in New South Wales. Two more convict fleets arrived in 1790 and 1791, and the first free settlers arrived in 1793.
From 1788 to 1823, the Colony of New South Wales was officially a penal colony comprised mainly of convicts, marines and the wives of the marines.

The early convicts were all sent to Botany Bay, but by the early 1800s they were also being sent directly to destinations such as Norfolk Island, Van Diemen's Land,(Tasmania ) Port Macquarie and Moreton Bay.

Twenty per cent of these first convicts were women. The majority of women convicts, and many free women seeking employment, were sent to the 'female factories' as unassigned women. The female factories were originally profit-making textile factories. The Parramatta Factory grew as an enclave for pregnant women and also served as an orphanage from the 1830s.

While the vast majority of the convicts to Australia were English (70%), Irish (24%) or Scottish (5%), the convict population had a multicultural flavour. Some convicts had been sent from various British outposts such as India and Canada. There were also Maoris from New Zealand, Chinese from Hong Kong and slaves from the Caribbean.

TASMANIA:
The colony of Van Diemen's Land was established in its own right in 1825 and officially became known as Tasmania in 1856. In the 50 years from 1803-1853 around 75,000 convicts were transported to Tasmania. By 1835 there were over 800 convicts working in chain-gangs at the infamous Port Arthur penal station, which operated between 1830 and 1877.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA:
Western Australia was established in 1827 and proclaimed a British penal settlement in 1849 with the first convicts arrived in 1850. Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, became the colony's convict settlement in 1838 and was used for local colonial offenders.

VICTORIA:
In 1851 Victoria (Port Phillip District) separated from New South Wales. Apart from the early attempts at settlement, the only convicts sent directly to Victoria from Britain were about 1,750 convicts known as the 'Exiles'. They arrived between 1844 and 1849. They were also referred to as the 'Pentonvillians' because most of them came from Pentonville Probationary Prison in England.

QUEENSLAND:
In 1859 Queensland separated from New South Wales. In 1824, the penal colony at Redcliffe was established by Lieutenant John Oxley. Known as the Moreton Bay Settlement, it later moved to the site now called Brisbane. The main inhabitants of 'Brisbane Town', as it was known, were the convicts of the Moreton Bay Penal Station until it was closed in 1839. Around 2,280 convicts were sent to the settlement in those fifteen years.


The last shipment of convicts disembarked in Western Australia in 1868, ...'Hougoumont' On January 9, 1868, Australia's last convict ship.

Good mornin' all from Newcastle o t where the old git Fred has been up since five a m,got the garden watered ,seen to the greenhouse ,took the wife her cuppa up ,and saw to my brekkie , sardines on toast.

I sent Hoover an email yesterday Mary ,tongue in cheek complaining that my hoover broke down after only twelve years .he he,and said i had had to order a new one,got a nice reply from them too,who says firms have no sense of humour anymore .
I reckon the new one should be here within the fortnight ,but until then ,weeeeell,the sons machine will have to cope with the extra load .
I have to remember today to take a piccie in Macro for Our maid of honour at Seans wedding,seing as it's her that nicked to orange off the tree through the fence at the roadside in cyprus,lol, i bought six pips from said orange home with me and one struck.
I now have a lovely little orange bush sitting in the greenhouse ,and intend looking up on the net to find out what the ideal growing medium is for good growth.
it should be big enough in two years to go out on the patio in a big urn between the apple and plum trees.
Looks a bit cloudy here this morning ,but after the lovely day yesterday ,and the suntan i picked up while working ,and lazing about in the gardens ,i ain't gonn'a complain.

What a star you are. I am going to look for the info on the person I need in Tasmania. I know his name was William Walker but I think I might have a few other details too. I am going to print off all the links you posted. A lot of them I have used before and will use again, some I've never heard of but will enjoy looking through. I still regard myself as a bit of a novice but I don't do too badly and I love doing family history stuff. As soon as I get more details I'll post them. One thing though with this possible Tasmanian death certificate. If there is one, does that mean it will have a reference number and the lady in England who wants it will be able to order it herself on line?

Tasmania ( from Memory ) are a little behind with their cert postings ( Here and O/seas ) compared to other States......but then itsbeen a while since iv'e ordered from Tassie, and they may have caught up.

You say William Walker was a Convict..........Convicts are right up my alley, and i have a few in my tree. Mind you though ,they are my better halves and my grandchildrens ( on there fathers side )
My own lot were to squeeky clean to be corrupt.......Damn then.......hee hee

Tony, what a legend you are. The William Walker my email friend is after is the one who arrived on the Theresa near the bottom of your list. As for the list of deaths, the most likely would be:

If it helps, his parents were Thomas Walker and Hannah Hooper or Cooper. Are you able to look in more depth at the certificate to see if this is him? Also if you can find out if it is actually him, could you tell me the address that my contact can email with the registration details so that she can order the certificate? Hope that wan't too confusing.

I quite like convicts too.Had a few on my Dad's side of the family and a few on my Husband's side. One was a highwayman, sounds dahing but he was probably just a thug. Still very interesting looking into them.

Hi Alison.

Unfortunatley, i cannot look at the details as to what is written on the actual death certificate....unless i order and pay for it.
This like many certs we order , are a hit and miss, as to how much information was put down on his Death cert. ( Parents ) as they are only as good as the information supplied at the time of his death, and how much the informant knew about the deceased. There was no extra info on my cd's to say whom his parents were.

Ordering a death cert would/should perhaps give a spouse name and/or children........... if he re-married.?
Also perhaps his parents names, if anyone knew whom his parents were. This was always a problem with many convicts, as they came alone.... some re-married...( even with a wife and children back in the U.K ) .....and or stayed single and died alone.

Your friends best bet would be to see if she can find the place or records office/County in which he was tried.....and it looks like, from the info ( below ) it was Hertfordshire. It may give extra info about his trial in the U.K.?
