Well Peter,
Shooting is a sport, a hobby for many, and a business for others.
I am not interested much in football, golf, running,or other strenuous outlets.
how would it be if other nonsports people were to advocate prevention or ownership/possession at home, of say football gear? golf clubs?and OH! those spikey running shoes they wear!!
or even motor racing, now THATS a dangerous sport, in my opinion, but to each his own.........

good on you eldrick, i do not have the knowledge or the skills to ensure safe and proper use, plus being a veggie i dont need one to stock my freezer

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 25 Jul 2008 18:11

Yep, your choice :-)

Mine is different - whilst there is still the freedom to choose, I do so and own, under the proper license, a goodly selection.

And I use them for the purpose for which they were designed - to stock my freeer. Which they do admirably, thank you very much!

Hi Webster,

Well said and I know that Taff will echo my comments too.

There is no place today for guns of any sort in the home, unless, as I said earlier, unless there is a professional purpose for owning one.

That is my choice, nothing illogical, or irrational about this, just being sensible.

I would not let my sons own an air rifle and i would not want one in my home. However i have let them use them supervised and have myself for shooting at targets and clay pigeon shooting which is great fun. I also love archery and think using a bow and arrow is great, in the right environment.

I understand many people have air riffles at home, and that is their choice, unfortunately not all are as responsible as perhaps those on here are and there are 'accidents' involving them, the most recent near here was when a girl was shot in the street by accident by a lad shooting at tin cans.

My cousins parents are farmers, they have guns and that is fine, i live in a town and do not see the need for one in my house. There are local sports centres, clay pigeon shoots and campsites where my kids can use air riffles and bows and arrows safely and under supervision.

No, thats nothing to do with air rifles either!

lol

Good response. Well thought out and erudite. But nothing to do with air rifles.....now are you going to keep changing the goalposts all the time?

If i want a lecture, to this standard I will go back to the primary school!

Yes, and your point is?

That analogies arent allowed?

The most common, respected and logical debating tool has suddenly been arbitrarily banned to suit an argument that cannot be sustained? lol

Rationality and logic go out of the window and firearms debates are not allowed to use the art of rhetoric?

I see. So in that case what has your sons experience got to do with anything as it has no relevance at all to Kims son and his wish to pracise a sport or her decision to allow him to....?

lol

Anything can be used as a Lethal weapon" in the wrong hands.

Taff

Taff Report 24 Jul 2008 21:39

But this thread is about firearms.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 24 Jul 2008 21:13

So would you apply that logic across the board Peter?

Or purely in relation to firearms?

If only in relation to firearms, is it not rather illogical or irrational?

There are common everyday implements that cause far more avoidable deaths than firearms.....

Oh dear Oh dear.

All very nice until someone is killed, maimed or blinded by gun going off by complete accident in the home by a cousin or relative who didn't know what they were doing and had no business to be playing with the the said weapon.

As I have said, before, and will again, if you want to shoot, then go to a recognized shooting club. No guns at home as far as I am concerned, unless it is necessary as part of your profession

Eldrick Report 24 Jul 2008 21:08

I lost a close relative who was killed by a car in a hit and run accident - but it would be totally irrational for me to say that no one should be allowed to have a car.....or to stop my son from having one....

Kitty, because one of my sons was lucky enough to have just his jacket damaged, and not his arm.

I agree Michael.................a gun is an inanimate object and as safe or unsafe as the person holding it.

If anyone is taught the proper way to handle, clean and shoot a gun, I really can't see any problem with it.

Why is it that the few idiots lead us to worry that anyone who has a gun is going to cause harm to our pets or ourselves.

We can be over protective. Before I was 16 I had owned an airgun a bow and arrow and a catapult.I used to go rabbiting and thought nothing of it.Loads of accidents and near misses but we learned from these. These are very different times and I would not presume to advise suffice to say I have seen bad accidents caused by conkers and marbles........and even cars,we wouldnt stop people taking their children in cars would we?
