tizer was only on rimadyl for six weeks and it killed him,but he was 11yrs old and a lab(labs have the worst reaction to rymadyl)so you were very lucky that your dog didnt have a bad reaction after six months,but as ive said before its fine for some dogs and seems to help a lot,you just need to know the signs to look out for.x

ive just had a pm from a man blasting me for letting my children watch tizers horrible death,can i please make it clear that my children are not young,they are all adults age 18,19,23,and 26 tizer protedted my children when they were young and they all wanted to be with him when he passed away,of course i wouldnt of let them watch such a horrible thing if they were small.x

she was given prednisilone for the tumours she had
but her cough just stayed the same,
your kids are quiet understandably heart broken give them all hugs from me,
poor tizer, hes at piece now, and outa pain, i know its no consolation but you really have my thoughts

this vet must of known,
anti inflamatrys can cause bleeding,

Suzanne, as you say your kids are not small children. i am sure they chose to stay in the room. you were all there to support each other. which is what a family doe's.

How dare someone pm you like that, without knowing the facts? I think it is important for kids of any age to understand the cruelties of life as well as the joys (within reason of course, wouldn't put a child under 7 or 8 through that) Better than telling a youngster that a dog went to sleep or some similar phrase, could make them imagine they might go to sleep and not wake up etc. The truth is often easier to deal with than lies and cover ups, even if it hurts at the time and causes tears.
I hope you told that person where to get off.

Whoever you are, I hope you're reading this ...... what you did was totally unnecessary. You could have simply pm'd Suzanne and asked how old her children were.

Hi I have read all the posts in this thread.

Firstly, I would like to send my best wishes to all you people who have lost their beloved dogs.

Now, we must not forget that any drug given to our pets are not without side effects, it is important that as pet lovers, we ask about them when they are being prescribed. As it has been said, Rimadyl has probably helped many dogs in pain.

Any drug administered for long periods are bound to have an effect on the animals, as does any drug taken by humans.

I have two large newfoundland dogs, both of which have had rimadyl for different reasons. My oldest dog Toby who is nearly 12 years old had them prescribed periodically a few years ago when he slipped discs. My vet did not tell me of any side effects but would only prescribe two weeks supply at one a day. On one occasion, his pain did not go away and he had a further two weeks prescribed. I must point out that my vet was causious about giving them indefinately. Toby had no side effects luckily and has since had them occasionally when his arthritis was causing him more than usual problems.

My other newfoundland is almost 9 and a half years old with DCM a heart condition identified when she was just 3 years old. She is on other medication, permanently so is monitored on a regular basis for any signs of side effects. The Rimadyl was prescribed after she had an operation last year for pymetra (think thats how it is spelt) it is an infection of the womb which can kill. When we signed the consent for the operation, we thought we were signing her life away as we didn't think she would come through the op. Heart condition or not, she is a fighter and I am glad to say she came through it and again, the Rimadyl prescribed for pain after the op had no side effects.

We must remember that every dog reacts differently to different drugs, therefore, we must ask our vet about the side effects and if there are any alternative drugs with fewer effects.

I know I have been lucky, and I am not suggesting that the stories of side effects included on this thread should be ignored, losing a pet is as painful as losing a child, they are part of the family and we all want what is best for them. We must make our choices wisely and ask our vets questions to help us come to our conclusions as to whether to administer the drugs or not. My own vet has always been helpful when I bombard him with questions. Only last week, I took Tutsey to see him as I thought she was having a phantom pregnancy. I hadn't seen one before, had heard of them, but I couldn't think of any other reason for her new behaviour. During the night, she was pacing the downstairs and digging up corners and on sofas, and at doors and was getting very distressed (not good when you have a heart condition!). My husband and my self took it in turns each night to lie with her to keep her calm. It was when on the fourth night, she was carrying her cuddly toys around and moving them from place to place that I realised she was "nesting". Drugs used to be given to help phantom pregnances but my vet refused. I have taken all her toys away and she has been on antibiotics to stop mastitis (dogs can produce milk in phantoms) and instantly had a result - she is sleeping at night! We have to leave it about 3 weeks before she gets her toys back (much to the annoyance of Toby) just incase she reverts.

Give the vets a chance.....ask the questions!

Sorry to ramble, but I have seen what bad arthritis can do to a dog, and some owners have to have their animals put down. Painkillers can be the answer - for short periods when it is really bad.

Just one more thing. We are all armed with the internet on this site. If you know what is wrong with your dog, look it up on the internet to see what options of treatment there are BEFORE you visit the vet and ask him about them.

hi dee,your mail was very interesting,and i agree with you that rimadyl does do a lot of good for some dogs(i have stated that in my posts) my aim was to warn people not scare them,so many people me included have a lot of faith in our vets,tizer was only on rimadyl for six wks,two wks before he died he started bleeding from the mouth(side affect excesive bleeding)our vet said it was something else and never asked what meds he was on,two days before he died he stopped drinking(another side affect of rimadyl)i thought he was feeling under the weather so i started giving him water from a syringe,then that night the fits started,(another side affect of rimadyl)when he died at 5am(with the vets help)he was bleeding from the mouth,nose and eyes(excesive bleeding)rimadyl is not to be given to labs because they react badly,tizer was a black lab.i rest my case.xx

hi yorkie,just reg on that site,waiting for e mail to comfirm,i was wrong about the americans trying to ban rimadyl,they HAVE banned it.(that says a lot doesnt it.x

Suzanne, I am so very sorry about Tizer, the night our beloved Zac died { lab/ German shep cross} He suffered and lost all control, fitted, not due to a drug though.

before tizer died,i really couldnt understand why people grieved so much over a pet, i thought that i would be upset,but nothing prepared me for the pain,its like losing a child,hes buried in our garden his grave has more flowers than some poor humans have,and my husband spent two hrs in his shed making a grave stone for him,every time i look outside my kitchen window i see it and cry,its been 8days now since he died and the pain is terrible.if i can stop some other dog owner going through what we are going through then i will.x

I know how you feel Suzanne. We've lost two dogs in three years and it's awful.

My old lady going broke my heart........trouble is it broke my old boys heart too and I swear he never got over it. I haven't ever done either really. It's so hard. Sending you lots of (((hugs))) xx

yes only some breeds as far as i know,labs being one of the worst(tizer was a lab)but if this drug has such a terrible effect on some breeds of dog,i would have thought my vet would have known,tidadyl has been banned in the us because it has killed so many dogs......
