Todays burning questions are

I just washed and dried the teenage daughters white school shirts
while folding them i noticed a button had come off, so i find said button

Get the sowing box out

As i am about to sew the button back on, daughter comes into the room

askes what am i doing

me: a button has come off your shirt so i am going to sow it back on

her: Why?

me: well unless you want to show a bit to much clevage at school it might be a good idea dont you think?

her: why bother, just buy some new ones!!!!

me: what??

her: well its not like they cost a lot is it............she then walks out of the room

So the questions are

1/ Do i jump in the car, drive into town, spend ages finding somewhere to park then go and whatever money on a pack
of new school shirts, drive home, or sew a button on lol

2/ Has this "throw away socity" we live in now gone totaly mad

Your oppinions on this one lol

I'm with You, Steve.........
unless they are taught, they have no idea of values.....

(Ideally, It would be good If she were to care for her clothes herself and sew her own buttons on!)

Steve,

If she is a teenager, perhaps she should be persuaded to do her own ironing and learn to sew on buttons. All teenagers should be encouraged to contribute to the smooth running of the household.

All that is said slightly tongue in cheek - I always did the ironing for my teenagers, and long after if I was honest.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 8 Mar 2008 15:33

LOL I was thinking exactly the same as Blue Moon said.

I can only imagine the response a comment like hers would have got me from my parents. But then I would never have even thought it, I would already have been sat their sewing the button on. Money was tight for us and as a result I have great money management abilities...even better than my parents lol.

When she needs new ones she won't mind buying her own since they don't cost much! LOL

I cannot believe she wanted to throw away a shirt because a button had come off.

SS

Nor can I as she actualy knows the value of money

but i think its just how times have changed since we were young

~Summer Scribe~ Report 8 Mar 2008 15:40

Surely they haven't changed that much, Steve, I'd have thought we're encouraged to recycle and all that so much more these days that she'd have been the one jumping on you if you *hadn't* sewn the button on. LOL.

SS

I think they have in a way, yes i aggree that were all encouraged to recycle

but we were brought up in a re use culture if it could be re used it was old woolen coats cut up to make clippy mats ect

old jeans used to patch holes in other jeans

today everthing is consumer driven, could you would never see a teen with a patch on a pair of jeans unless everyone else is wearing em lol

Yes it is a throw away society.

My stair carpet was a good one A1 Axminster, it is now 48 years old, and has been in two houses(lucky same size stairs).

It was fitted with stair rods, so occasionally it is shifted up or down.and shampood once a year. Therefore kept from wearing out .

I dont like throwing things away when there is a lot more wear in them.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 8 Mar 2008 17:17

Ah and I remember when patches on jeans were the fashion statement lol. No it's the recurring phase of letting the rips hang free...and be damned to anything that can be seen through them (I'm still turmatised [sic])

Teddy's 48 years? Good grief!
