I have a William Stacey b c1839 in my tree. I know his father was John but was unsure of anything else. I recieved his birth certificate today and it only had a mothers name on. |

If the father's name is not on the cert, the child was illegitimate. |

As Reggie says, lots of illegitmate children "made" up a name for their marriage cert or used the name of their mother's subsequent husband, ie their unoffical stepfather |

Rebekah, was he baptised? If so, the parish records might tell you if he was illegit. Sometimes they say 'illegit of' some of them say base born or even bastard. Some just have the mothers name and in the occupation square 'single woman'. Parish records can be quite helpful at times. |
