I have the name Aquilla in my tree - for both sexes. According the Wikipedia it is a man mentioned in the Biblical Book of Acts. Or Aquila, a Biblical person from the Acts and Paul's letters. So not sure why that name was given to girls.

You are right about Charley being a female name in it's own right, but tends to be a more modern name.
I suppose I was thinking about the ancestors and us not supposing their sex by their names on the census.
Let alone the ones who changed their names. Like my g grandfather. Christened Gifford, but changed his name as soon as he could to Sidney - it even has Sidney on his gravestone. His brothers, to make it even more difficult for me, changed their names from Ivan to Frederick and Sylvanus to Herbert!!!
I had to trace them through their sensible sister who kept her own name!

I just checked on Google and this info is there for anybody, so I'm safe to say it is Bob Wilson, he was the Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper in the 70's, then a TV presenter for years.

I think Charley (female) is a name in it's own right isn't it?

Just thought of another one, I have a friend called TJ, his name is actually Tracy.
Used to be Tracy = male
Tracey = female
but it has sort of merged now and many Tracy's are female.

I always wondered where Alma came from too, but apparently it was quite a common boys' name at one time - I read recently that it was the name of a battle during the Crimean war.

Anyone remember the wrestler, Big Daddy? His christian name was Shirley. John Wayne's real name was Marion. And there was a top class footballer in the 70's whose middle name was Primrose - don't think I should name him as he is still alive.
