Not sure if this is exactly what you mean but when I go to A different area than the one I live in, I always buy the local parish/church magazine, as there is often useful numbers in them, Library opening hours etc.

I bought it last year - £6.99 in paperback.

Tracing your Scottish Ancestors - Scottish Records Office, Cecil Sinclair. Explains what to look for, what you can find in each section, and how to find it.


Understanding Documents for Genealogy & Local History - Bruce Durie.
This book has a section on Latin grammar whch is helpful if you have got back so far that you need some knowledge! Also a Glossary of Latin place names, a Glossary of Gaelic words, and a Glossary of Latin & Scots legal terms. I felt that overal the book leans towards Scottish Genealogy, although the title doesn't indicate so, and that's not to say England & Wales aren't included.
Chapters include Inscriptions & Gravestones, Heraldry, OPR's, Entails, Wills & Testaments, Sasines, Retours, Kirk Sessions, Manorial Docs, Deeds & Land.


The Lithuanians in Scotland - John Millar/Jonas Stepsis.
For anyone with Lithuanians who immigrated to Scotland this little book is a must!

For anyone with Baltic immigrant ancestors, this is my latest acquisition and very interesting it is too...
'Changing Identities - Latvians, Lithuanians and Estonians in Great Britain' by Emily Gilbert.
Chapters cover Brief History before 1946, The Homeland, Displacement, Labour schemes in Britain, Settling In 1950's.

....true story of the search for her father, 'Jess' had been told he was dead, but after discovering some family secrets, a name in a letter, and a 'gut feeling' her search began.

Some of you may already know of this story, since 'Jess', in her search for the mystery man, asked for help and advice on a genealogy website forum (not GR).
Her request took off at great speed, acquiring an enormous following - it was truly amazing to see the help she got from amateur teamwork (many of whom are ex-GR members whose names you would know) ;-) (too bad GR won't get the glory, but that's another story).

I can thoroughly recommend this book...it's a MUST read! So read it, read it, read it, you'll love it :-)

Christian, Peter The Genealogist's Internet (Genealogist's Guide)

I have shelves of books on Genealogy - or Family History, years ago a friend gave me Lawrence Stones " The Family, Sex & Marriage in England 1500-1800 " Its the best book in my collection, I never tire of it.
Recently I splurged and bought a second hand, hard back copy, which contains much more than my old paper back.
For any one interested in the social background and times, I think this book is a must.
On the whole genealogy books tend to be the author's account of his family own search, which is different in each location. But Stones books are more general.
Worth a look, enjoy :-)
