Dorothy - is this the rhyme you remember, it was a riddle. Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy, and Bess, all went together to steal a birds nest they each took an egg , but left one in. How many eggs were left in the nest? The answer was four because they were the same person. Sue. |

Hi Andrea, The 1881 Census shows Betsy married to Thomas Quinn who was born in Darwen. The 1901 Census also shows the family still together but with the addition of Alice b.1891. Dave Platt |

Unfortunately I don't know when they got married - that is something I am trying to find out. I have done a search on FreeBMD from round about the time when the first child was born, but there are several Elizabeths and I also don't know where hubby came from - I just have Lancashire so far and all the weddings took place in Manchester and Oldham etc - which are all Lancashire!! This lady is proving to be a right royal pain in the ....!! I guess I will have to fork out yet more money and send off for a child's birth certificate and hope that helps. Probably should have done that from the beginning instead of giving myself all this headache....we live and learn! |

re Wendy - people say there aren't any prior to the publishing of Barrie's Peter Pan. It was a development of the word friend - fwendy - Wendy, However it can be argued that it was in evidence before that as a development of the Welsh Gwendoline, also that it was a boy's name in the 1700's re Betsy It could be Elspeth Best wishes Ann |

Andrea, Do you know when she got married and who her husband was? You could try looking for the marriage record on BMD. You will get several women as a match but that might help. Crista |

With all these variations on names, some of them totally bizarre, it makes you wonder how we have all got as far as we have. I say well done us!!! Doesn't help much though does it?!! Thanks for all the help. I guess she will turn up somewhere.....maybe! |

Hi My GGrandmother was called Betsy and I spent ages looking for Elizabeth only to find she was actually christened plain old Betsy! Be aware though my husbands GGrandmother was called Polly so assumed her name was Mary, it turned out to be Ethel MARY. Presumably she was called Polly as there was a daughter Ethel. Karen |

Hmmm, I guess this could take a while then! I don't think it is any of the Betsy Quinns on FreeBMD as her and all her family seem to come from Darwen, Lancashire. I will check on the ones on 1881 but I think the last time I went on there, the only reference I could find was the one with her and the whole family, but she was listed as Betsy. I am trying to find her proper name so I can try looking for their marriage and get her maiden name etc. I have checked out the websites (thanks for these) so I have a few possibilites to check out. Thanks for all your help. |

If it's any help I have a relative who appears as Betsey on one census and Bessie on another. It's worth using the nicknames site to come up with as many different variations on Elizabeth as possible, as she could appear under any of them! |

Andrea On freebmd there are three Elizabeth Quinns in 1853/1854, in Lambeth, West Derby and Liverpool. Any good? Whoops, re-read your posting above and saw that Quinn was her married name, so ignore my ramblings! |

I should have taken heed of this message the other day - i've spent hours looking for a Frances, she just turned up in 1881 as Fanny! By the way can anyone think of another name for Winifred - i've tried Win, Winnie, Fred and Freddie! Sue. |
