Does anyone know whether there was a census taken in Australia between 1880 and 1900 and whether there is internet access to it. I have had quite a lot of success with http://www(.)bdm(.)nsw(.)gov(.)au and now know what happened to a branch of family who emmigrated to Lismore NSW, but would like to see whether I could make contact with living relatives, but don't know how. Any help gratefully received!! Best wishes Neil |

Antipodeans indeed!! rotfl The Free Settlers if you don't mind! Anyway, Neil! If you are trying for living rellies the telephone company on-line directory is a goodie and also the Australian Electoral Roll, but that isn't on-line as far as I know. I will check out the census dates for you as I really don't know when they were taken. As soon as I find out, I will post here for you but you will probably be snoring by then anyway! The telephone company is www(.)whitepages(.)com(.)au or incase that doesn't show in this message like my last one didn't .. www dot whitepages dot com dot au HTH Sonja |

Neil. I believe the first offical Australian Census was taken in 1911. Maz, after looking up the meaning of antipodeans, I find myself totally NOT offended...lol in fact I must thank our English relatives for sending us antipodeans to a place where the sun shines, the air is fresh, and land is still young!!! We should deserve such punishment!!..lol Regards, Jenny Antipodean :) |

Jennifer and Marion; There was no offence intended at my post!I am sorry if it was misconstrued as such. rotfl is just that- rolling on the floor laughing! Being a first geno Ozzie my Mum & Da ALWAYS referrred to me as the antipodean! The only one in a family of 8!! Not bad hey!?When I got older I used to retort with " I am a Free settler!" Sonja |

Sonja, No offence was taken at all. I had just never heard (antipodean) the term before. I think it's a delightful term, and I'm sure Maz meant nothing by it either. I delight in the friendly banter between us Aussies and our English friends. I knew what rotfl meant. Sorry Neil for taking up your space, but hey, it keeps your message on top!!! Jenny |

Must say, I didn't know what antipodean meant either. Thanks for extending my vocab. I am involved with a museum here in Oz, so if you send me the details, I'll see what I can find as I am tracing Families for a number of people here. Also waiting on a contact from a fellow 'who knows anything worth knowing', so let me know you names and dates etc. Linda |

Nothig derogatoy about using the term antipodean to describe an Australian. It simple means someone who has their feet on the opposite side of the world. So it can also be used to describe New Zealander's. antipodes n.pl. places diametrically opposite to one another on the earth, esp. (also Antipodes) Australasia in relation to Europe. antipodean adj. & n. [Greek, = having the feet opposite] Stuart |

Technically, then, everyone is an antipodean - we're all opposite someone on the world! My 'Australian' relatives, apart from being too distant to count, probably left no trace there. They couldn't wait to keel over and die the moment their feet hit Australian soil. |

Just as well Kathryn that we have PLENTY of wide open spaces for your departing rellies to push the daisies up in then, hey!! Seriously now, they may well be traceable even though the have shuffled off their mortal coils. I am planning on going to the LSD in the nest two weeks ... could I have a look for you? Steenson? Hi Neil; I have just printed off the info (hope you don't mind) so I can trot off to the LSD with it under my wing! I may not be able to do it, like yeaterday, as school holidays have just started here in Queensland, but if you don't mind waiting a week or so....... I know it is a big ask as I get REALLY impatient when I have to wait for geno stuff. It is like it will vanish if I don't get it yesterday! It is a nightmare here when I have ordered certs as they have to obviously come from England! Egads!@! SOnja |

Sonja - thanks for the offer! Yep, that's the correct surname. Don't worry if you can't find anything - quite frankly some of that family didn't deserve the time of day when they were alive. How long does it take to get a certificate from Englamd? I'd never thought about that before. I'd go potty waiting. |

Sonja Thank you very much for your help. I think I can wait til next week. I have had the same problem with waiting for certificates to come from Oz. I had to wait 6 weeks for some of them because the order was lost!! Best wishes Neil |

I use a researcher to get my certificates. I have found it MUCH safer that way and I can pay into his account in Aussie dollars! It takes about 4 - 6 weeks so while Neil is going balmy over there waiting, I am doing the same thing here! I usually save up and send off for 5 or 6 in a hit then I only have to do one wait.... if you get my drift!! I will have a sticky beak for both of you when I am the FHC. Sonja |
