Jeanette, I don't live near London and only ever go there on business, so it wouldn't be easy. I'm also not sure they married in the bride's parish of St Lukes. The other weird thing is how none of their kids' births seem to be on the civil registers either. Getting her maiden name would be a real breakthrough. Rick. |

Rick Lots of questions now! Have you tried searching under variant spellings such as Pyke? Have you tried searching later than 1842 for the marriage? Do they appear on later censuses? What are their childrens names? And the big question - Did they ever get married? She may just have taken Alfred's name. Jeanette |

Jeanette, I've looked for Pyke on freebmd and the IGI, but not on 1837online - I'll give that a go. I've tried searching later than 1842 again on freebmd and the IGI. They would have had 2 kids by then. I know that doesn't necessarily mean they married before that. They are on the 1851 census: 1, Beresford Street, St Peter Walworth, Surrey Alfred Pike,34,wig maker, St Georges East Marianne Pike,32,St Lukes Edward Pike,10,Marylebone Alfred Pike,9,St Pancras Emilie Pike,6,St Annes Soho Harry Pike,4,St Martins Louisa Pike,2,Paddington Charles Pike,0,Newington Surrey This family is definitely my one - Emilie is my GG grandmother and I'd really like her birth cert. If the Alfred Pike I found the birth entry for on the IGI is the same one (and I think it is) then he belonged to a non-conformist (independent) church. I can't know for sure that he ever married Marianne. Rick. |

Rick Try putting a message on the Records Office board to see if anyone is willing to do a look up in the St. Annes Soho parish registers for your Emilie, or any of the others in their parishes. Just a thought. Although there doesn't seem to be a particularly big gap between births of the children, perhaps Marianne isn't the real mother of them all. Perhaps there was a 1st wife who died. Checked 1837online for Alfred Pyke marriages between Jan 1837 and Dec 1841 - none at all :-( |

Jeanette, Thanks for those ideas. I'll try the parish register lookup request. It hadn't occured to me that she could be a second wife. There is a gap between Emilie and the older boys, but I wondered if a middle child had died. Rick. |

That's certainly a possibility Rick. Keep us posted with how you get on. Jeanette |

Susie My hubby is a welder by trade! He then worked for several double glazing companies selling windows (he could sell snow to Eskimos) before setting up his own DG company. Got sick of bad fitters so decided to do it himself. We've now branched out into property refurbishment - but obviously not at our house. lol Jeanette |
