Hi Natalie, my G,G, Grandfather was listed as comb maker. I know it's obvious, but was it an industry or a trade he learned ? Karen . |

Hi Karen, the definition in the dictonary is "Industrial (textile) or hairdresser's comb maker" - I guess it was a trade within an indutsry? Natalie |

Actually there are lots of different types of combs. You would have to know which industry he was associated with to find out more. |

Not sure which type of comb. On one census it says comb maker and later comb finisher. But thanks for the replies. Karen :) |

Wool is combed and carded before further processing, a comb maker makes the combs which fit onto combing machinery in a woolen mill. A pudler works in a steel refinery adding metals and carbon etc. to a puddling furnace. lol Dave |

Hi Natalie My Grandmother and her sister were Gold Beaters, and Skin Preparers. I have looked this up on Google, and found that they would have been making Gold Leaf. However, would they have done this at a Jewelers I wonder, or sweat shop or where?????? Lisa xxx |

Sorry Barry.....A Cordwainer is a shoe maker...NOT Bootmaker....Originally using Cordovan Spanish leather, cordwainers also made other items from leather. We had cordwainers in our family. Anne |

Hi folks, Sorry for the delayed reply, been away from the computer for a couple of days Patricia I have dictionary definition for a 'puddler' as being a miner for precious stones or ores/wrought iron worker Christine Sorry - no definition in my dictionary Lisa Gold Beater - Manufacturer of decorative gold leaf, beaten from thin rolled sheets of melte gold. Apparently fifty square inches of gold leaf weighed one grain and a cubic inch of the metal contained almost 5,000 grains (there you go!) No definition for skin preparer Samantha Barry has given you a more filled out definition compared to my dictionary which just says 'brewer'! Barry/Anne My dictionary says a cordwainer is a shoemaker & not a bootmaker! Originally using Cordovan Spanish leather, In practice cordwainers also made many other objects from leather (i.e. leather bottles) Linda Sorry I couldnn't find a definition for 'hieman' or anything that looked similar Hope that helps Natalie |

A maltster treated barley to turn it to malt (NOT treat barley with malt). A gilder would apply gilt to something to colour it gold. Perhaps a skin preparer would remove the last traces of flesh from leather before the tanning process |
