The other day on telly they were saying that the most common reason for womens deaths in Victorian times (after childbirth) was burning. When you think about it, open fires, solid fuel ranges to cook on etc., long skirts trailing about - had to happen, didnt it. |

Heather, was that on an episode of QI, by any chance? Will add more in a minute, hopefully - I know of some online parish records I want to look over. From the parish of St. Mary the Virgin, Bottesford, I found these curious ones - Thomas Bailey - 'lying in bed 18 years with hip complaint' Isaac Smith - 'dropped down dead' |

...and in the 1920s and 30s, over 1000 women a YEAR, died while ironing!!! Always knew it was dangerous. (They electrocuted themselves, because early electric irons had to be plugged into a light socket) OC |

Not a cause of death (well, not often) but did you know that over 500 people a year suffer serious injuries in the home, caused by sofas? OC |

I have just spent my whole lunch hour reading this thread. I have never laughed so much! I haven't got anything to add, but I would love to know what 'decline' on a death cert means. I have a few with it on..presumably it means someone had been ill for quite sometime and death was the result?? Amazing that this thread has been going since 2004! Brilliant!! Can't wait for more. |
