Sorry I was thinking of your Dad's christening but perhaps one of our Oz subscribers may be able to point you in the right direction for churches in Sydney.

Hi Julie If he was born in Australia, which is what we've always been told, and I decide to follow that track, I can't find out anything from this end, all I know, is it was Sydney in 1881. So I can't see anyone being able to do a search for me!! Desperate!!! Val

Don't think you can view Parish Records online but if you can find out what church(s) he was likely to have been christened in you could write to them. Some parish records are located in local history/library archives - perhaps someone may do a lookup for you.

Hi Irene I'm sorry but I can't help myself either!! We have no marriage certificate cannot find any!! We don't know anything about Grandad! he was not seen after 1927, so I can't even say if his job took him away!! I wish I was psycic!!! And we where never told what my grandfather died of!!! Val One way you will have to go the the Manchester Family History Records office, you will have to look at the Electoral Roll books. All men over 21 were down for voting from 1923 women over 21 didn't get the vote until 1928, if you have the other as well then check that address, see if they could be the same or similiar. I would think that he would not have put his name down twice for voting, sorry if this means two trips, but at least it may confirm one way or the other. Did you say you had his marriage certificate to your gran, if not then that will have to be found. Next try and find the marriage for the other in Essex. See if both had the same father. Did his job mean he would travel? again was he away a lot. What did the other die of, could it have been a long illness. This could be if he didn't come home then your Gran tried to findout where he was and maybe found out about this other family. There is all sorts of possibilities but first I think you will have to find out about these two and if they could have been the same. Irene

Hi Julie Thanks for your reply. I sent for the birth certificates for Dad and his Aunt, so I know that my Gran registered both births!! I can send for Grans death certificate, but I know that my Aunt was with her when she passed away, in 1963 and will have registered her death!! No I never even thought to enquire about a christening for Dad!!!!. ( is there a way on internet, or do I have to go to Manchester?) And I know it's a definite no!! to having help from the parish, her Mum looked after the children, while she worked, (she worked her socks off all her workable life! to give the children a good start to life) Dad always said his little Mum worked hard for them, and he used to worry she did too much!! So where do I go from here????!!!!! regards Val

Hi Irene I read and replied to your email before reading your thread!!! So you will not get all the answers to this. My aunt always remembered, while she was a little girl, a big man (but he would seem big to a 2to3 year old, she assumed that he was their father, but she never said if he had an accent, but again I don't suppose she would have noticed that at her age!!) He must have left Gran (her Mum, Helen also lived with them!!!!) Dad said they stayed in the same area most of his childhood. If Frederick died much later, how in heavens name can I find him? I thought I had (died first 1/4 1928) and sent for the death certificate, but it was a Frederick Harry. All I ever found about my Gran, (Lillian) Dads Mum, was on the 1901 census aged 9, living with her Mum in Manchester (a widow). I hope you can come up with some answers for me, I'd be eternally grateful!!!!! regards Val

Sorry delay in replying. You could ask on the Records message board for a couple of lookups - they are very helpful Grandmother's death in 1963 and Auntie's birth in 1924. Give as much information that you have Names, location, year of birth/death, age at death if known or approximate. Once you have the references you can order the certificates. It will give the name of the person who supplied the info for the certificate. Have you looked for a christening for your dad in the area he was born - you might be lucky and find his father's name in the parish records. Wonder if she received assistance from the parish to bring up the children - perhaps there are records but I haven't been down that road so wouldn't know where to look. Sorry can't really help with this one.

Valarie I do feel for you. Lets stop and think, he was said to have come from Australia, so maybe he did, he would have had an accent. So why did she say he had died, maybe he did, but did she never speak of him, so either she had found out something, like he was already married or something happened to make her leave, did she stay in the same home town do you know. What did people do went they wanted to get away from someone so that person didn't know where they were, they would lie and lie to their children. So maybe he didn't die then but much later. Had you found the mothers birth details and have you found her on any census where was your father born, was it near where your Aunt was born. Just had a thought who recorded the birth, was it your fathers mother or grandmother. That may explain why his name isn't down. Irene

Hi, Your gran's death registration will be on the website 1837online (it is a pay to view site). When you have the reference send for her death certificate to see what information it has. You can search 1837online for her marriage as well. Gwynne

Hi again Julie My Gran died in 1963 in Manchester, how do I go about finding her death certificate on the net? Or is that an impossible task?! We don't have my aunts paperwork, to look up her fathers details, if they where on her marriage certificate! Any other suggestions PLEASE!!! Val

Did the sister get married - if so what was put on her marriage certificate? Also the mother's death certificate - did it say wife of? as it does in scottish death certificates. Depending on his trade perhaps a look in one of the trade directories might possibly come up with something or even a will if he had something to leave to his family. What about trying the local cemetary office records for around that time. Have you tried a different spelling Jorge or Gorge or something. I have a Lumsdane that changed to a Lumsden when grand daughter registered death and another grand daughter registered a different maiden name for her grand mother too!!!! Did they not think of the difficulties they would cause us???????

Hi Julie Yes I did check the following year for a death and I found a Frederick H George, hoped that this might have been him, right age! right initials! he was then a confectioner and tobaconist, yes he could have changed his profession too! he died in wanstead Essex in January with his SON (not my Dad) present. he died of Asthma and TB!!! How can I find out if these where the same man? (I know how easy it must have been to lead a double life but he must have been a very energetic man early on in his life to travel back and forth from Manchester to Essex) I suppose this could also be why I can't find a marriage between Lillian and Frederick!! Would be grateful for any other ideas!!! Good luck with your persuit! It sounds as if you have as big a problem as me!!! Thanks again for all your input Val

Seeing that the daughter had him down as her father and that the mother in law hated him leads me to think that he must have been the father of the son too. Otherwise surely her anger would have been directed at someone else. Think you may have to widen your search for a death for him - remember registration is usually put into the following quarter which may put it into another year. I would always look at least a couple of years either side. He may even have been in a sanatorium (TB) or gone back to Australia. I too am finding it difficult to find marriage and deaths on 1837 and scotlandspeople. Thankfully on scottish records they entered the date and place of marriage of the parents on the childs birth certificate so was able to go direct to the GRO. However the English Records aren't as detailed so more difficult to research. Still can't find a marriage or death in early 1900's.

Hi Sheila Dad was always told his Dad died not long after his birth but yes he could hav died while she was pregnant (I hoped some of this was true) but I can't find a death for him, I sent for a certificate that I thought might be him but it wasn't. So I'm still very stuck!! Thanks for your input though Val
