OK. When they married (in 1878) the marriage was between Matilda and Richard J. in 1881 the husbands name is Charles. His place of birth is listed as City of London, hers Old Bradwell. The Charles S is wrong on two counts - place of birth, and ages is even more out (27 in 1871, he would therefore be 37 in 1881, whereas "my" Charles is 30 in 1881). As to Old Bradwell... Yes ! It's now part of Milton Keynes - about 3 miles from my house. |

Yep. No sign of Richard J after the 1871 census. No sign of Matilda after 1881. No death record on Ancestry though. hmmm |

Checking for a brother is a good idea. Not sure how Id find out if his name changed though ? I guess he could have been just using an assumed name of Charles - its not that uncommon is it. I'll check for the brother first, thanks for the suggestion |

OK, I have a relly called Matilda King. She was born in Old Bradwell, Bucks, approximately 1862 (she was 9 on the 1871 census). I've found a marriage for her, in 1878 (16 !). On the same page are two mens names - Richard James Knock and William Webb. Searching the 1881 on Ancestry, I find a Matilda Knock (age doesnt quite match - she's listed as 24, but I'm assuming it's her), born Old Bradwell (living in Bethnal Green). Husbands name, however, is CHARLES Knock ! ???? |
