OK, I have a relly called Matilda King. She was born in Old Bradwell, Bucks, approximately 1862 (she was 9 on the 1871 census). I've found a marriage for her, in 1878 (16 !). On the same page are two mens names - Richard James Knock and William Webb. Searching the 1881 on Ancestry, I find a Matilda Knock (age doesnt quite match - she's listed as 24, but I'm assuming it's her), born Old Bradwell (living in Bethnal Green). Husbands name, however, is CHARLES Knock ! ????

Unknown Report 15 Dec 2004 14:47

Checking for a brother is a good idea. Not sure how Id find out if his name changed though ? I guess he could have been just using an assumed name of Charles - its not that uncommon is it. I'll check for the brother first, thanks for the suggestion

Yes thats them Lou I've looked in the 1871. I find a Richard J, aged 26 (in 1881 he's 30 !). No Charles in the household though. Did anotehr search on Charles and found the following, none of which look correct; Charles Knock 43 Middlesex, England Head St Andrew Devon Charles Knock 7 Devon, England Son St Andrew Devon Charles Knock 11 Essex, England Son West Ham Essex Charles Knock 8 Essex, England Son West Ham Essex Charles Knock 8 Middlesex, England Son St James Clerkenwell London Charles Knock 31 Suffolk, England Head Hundon Suffolk Charles A Knock 4 Suffolk, England Son Ipswich St Helen Suffolk Charles S Knock 27 Buckinghamshire, England Head New Windsor Berkshire

Unknown Report 15 Dec 2004 15:23

OK. When they married (in 1878) the marriage was between Matilda and Richard J. in 1881 the husbands name is Charles. His place of birth is listed as City of London, hers Old Bradwell. The Charles S is wrong on two counts - place of birth, and ages is even more out (27 in 1871, he would therefore be 37 in 1881, whereas "my" Charles is 30 in 1881). As to Old Bradwell... Yes ! It's now part of Milton Keynes - about 3 miles from my house.

I guess the answer is going to lie in the marriage certificate. I may find that one of the witnesses is Charles, and the names may have been transposed by the vicar. Or his name could be Richard James, and he just "assumed" the name of Charles later in life.

One interesting point is that the son is called Richard. Ann Glos

Unknown Report 15 Dec 2004 15:34

that hadn't slipped by unnoticed Ann ! Just neglected to comment on it. I think the most likely scenario is that Richard decided he fancied being known as Charles later in life. Stranger things have happened.

perhaps a wealthy relative called charles was about to die and he changed his name in hope of getting the money
