Jewish marriages had to be registered the same as every one else after 1837. But if you google "Jewish genealogy" you may find some useful sites. I sympathise, as my husband has a Jewish gt grandma who married out of her faith. Her father's marriage cert says HIS father was called Zalig, but the birth cert I got for him says his dad was Solomon. How many Zusman Harts were there born in Whitechapel in 1954??? nell

hi Nell i am soooo confused tryng to find sarah there are so many possibles but because i have limited knowledge of her its hard Ive found a birth for sarah mier but that makes her to old but henry who sandra found is a box maker in 1901 which is the same as on the marriage cert. more confused!!! so im not discarding anytjing yet regards Ann

I wouldn't discount something because it seems a different spelling from another source. I have a relative who is MALIN in the baptism register, Maling on her marriage cert and Mealing on her son's birth cert. I also have Chownes who became Chowns and even Chowndes on different documents. nell

Hi Ann I can't resist a further response. Myers is an old English name (son of a dweller in a mire or bog), whereas Mier is a variant of Meyer, a well established Jewish name. Although the first names Henry and Alice don't seem Jewish, Mier does seem the more likely if we are looking for a Jewish name. Now all you need apart from the birth certificate of his daughter is a marriage of a Henry Mier about 1880, with death of his wife before 1901, and his death before 1913. Two useful clues would be her address at the time of the marriage, to compare with her putative father's address at death, and the occupation of her father. Regards Stan

Hi Ann Just a final thought: is there any possibility that Sarah's father died when she was so little that she gave the wrong name for the marriage certificate? There is a child called John Louis Myers in Fazackerley Workhouse in 1901, aged 6, with William aged 8, and John Edward aged 5. So we can probably assume that John Louis Myers (the elder) was dead then. Regards Stan

Hi Ann There is a Sarah Myers aged 6 in the 1901 Census, at 5 Dobson Street, Everton, Liverpool, listed as niece of Alexander Johnston (RG13/3484, folio 47, p. 33). This might be the Sarah Myers born Oct-Dec 1894, Liverpool 8b 25. This is correct for the age in 1901, and more likely than the Sarah Myers born in Jul-Sep 1895, as there is also a death of a Sarah Myers Jul-Sep 1895. Until you get a birth certificate, I don't think you will have a lot of success in working out which Henry might have been her father. The birth certificate will give address, mother's maiden name, and father's occupation, which should enable a marriage to be identified. There were a few Myers deaths between 1894 and 1901, including a Harry, aged 50, in 1897. The best hope is to check the birth certificate against the 1891 census, although of course Henry might still have been living with his parents then. On the whole, I think the 1894 record is more likely than Mier from 1891, as the age at a marriage in 1913 for the latter would be 22, or at least 21, and so is likely to be stated correctly. The other, actually 19 but stated as 20, is quite a usual stretching of the truth. Regards Stan

Ann, Keith and Sarah seem to have found two possibilities. I also found the family in Everton. Possible that father had already died : 7 Dobson Street, Everton, Liverpool: Alexander Johnston, head, 46, General Porter, born Liverpool Mary " wife, 41, born Liverpool Alexander " son, 22, Printer, born Liverpool Sarah Myers, niece, 6, born Liverpool. There is a Sarah Myers age 6 living in Everton on the 1901 Census but she is not with her parents, she is with a Johnston family and is down as neice, if any of this sounds like it could be of use I can send image. Keith

Ann, The birth index will not give her father's name - only the certificate will give this as well as her mother's maiden name - but at least you can look for all the Sarah Myers within say a 5 year radius of 1893, if there are any others. The hirth index will simply give her name, year of birth, registration district, volume and page number. Have been trying to look on Ancestry for you, but my computer is very slow this evening. Kathy if i go to my local records office would i be able to check the fathers name?I'm looking for a birth 1894 to 1897 in the hope that she was younger than she said as i have been told not to believe marriage cert ages .regards ann
