I have always thought that it was short for Dorothy, but there is also Dorothea

Dolly can be a term of endearment/nickname for a small child, often the youngest in the family who as a little one was a'little doll'. It can also be a short name of Doris. However, I have a relative whose name is Elizabeth, known to her husband and children as Betty but toh er siblings as Doll.

Know what you mean, I think it is very useful to record these things when you do know about them though or find out about them. my grandmother was called Johanna and she was mainlly known as Dolly.

Hi, Like Maggie's relative my Nain was called Dolly as a child because she was so tiny. Her real name was Maria. She can't have minded, though because she married as Dolly Maria. Gwynne

Valerie As has already been suggested, if its not short for Dorothy or Doris it could be any name. My sister 32 is Dolly, her name is Karen. Been Dolly always coz she was a prem baby who was smaller than my dolly. She was called Dolly Blue or Dolly Daydream and the Dolly stuck. Even at school the teachers called her Dolly. I believe some where actually christened Dolly - plain and simple mind you my Aunty was a Dorothy kind of Dolly!

I had a great aunt known as Doll & she was Patience! I think it could have been anything, she was the youngest of 11, perhaps the older ones called her that

Hii Valerie, sorry, but I think it could be anything. My Grandmother was called Doll or Dolly all her life - her name was Emily which she hated! She was called Dolly as a baby becase she was so small and the name stuck. My Mum's name is Margaret but her brothers couldn't say it when she was born so called her baby which turned into Babs which she has been called all her life by her family. She only found out her name was Margaret on her first day at school when her StepMum told her that was her name! Regards Maggie
