Beat this one if you can!!! One of my mate's family was christened in the 1860's with the wonderful christian names of Hamlet Bertie Bevan Melanethan. Poor little soul. I bet he got a bit of ribbing from his classmates! |

Tonight I found that Humphrey & Mary Atherton (who may or may not be connected to us) in the 1600s gave their boys the names Watching and Consider, and their girls Rest and Thankful!!! They also had ordinary names for the rest of their brood. Wonder what was going on there!!!! LOL! Sue (in NZ) |

Hi I've got a n x Grtgrandmother by the name of REATILDA DRUSCILLA Clark/e(Clarke maiden, Clark married or vice versa). Unfortunately I haven't been able to trace her family back. I've also come across a REPENTANCE Scipton, in a parish record, although that's from the 1650's. And on a census I've seen LODACCIA. Helen |

Can you believe it, I forgot my Grandmothers name is Keturah (quite unusual,) and I have a neighbour called Brazil, (as in the country or the nut) but because their names are in use every day they don't seem so strange to me. Ruth .xXx. |

I have a Mahala and a Drusilla - both names are difficult to track because they seem to be mis-transcribed so often. I found a good link for Biblical names here, it's useful for looking up some of the more unusual ones that appear in the tree: http://www.ccel.org/bible_names/title.html |

Going back about 100 years I've got an auntie Minerva, known to all as Minnie. Perhaps not very unusual compared to some on here, however, Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, the counterpart of the Greek goddess Athina. Guess who, without knowing of Auntie Minerva, named her daughter Athina? Strange or what? Lisa |

An Aunt called Octenia, another Topsey and another Viney, Dad was called George! Octenia was the First born, not the eighth, so can't find a reason there. Suckling as a male name on another branch of the tree, named after his Godfather (But it was his surname!) Suex |

My grandfather born 1875 in Norfolk, was JEUEL JABEZ GRAY. Jeuel is mentioned once in the Bible. Family legend has it that Jeuel's mother Ruth, who was illegitimate, was very devout, and she called many of her sons after Biblical characters - Samuel, Lemuel etc. My Jeuel is the only one on ancestry apart from a possible that the transcriber has *ed. In case you are wondering, it was pronounced "Jool". On the other side of my dad's family, his mum's grandfather was called EMMETS MATTHEWS. I assume Emmets was a surname used as a first name, but have yet to check this out. Sadly all the women are Eliza/Susannah/Mary with the occasional Sophia or Louisa thrown in! nell |
