Thank you for this info. I also think the 1884 death was James senior. I have no idea though, as to why people have always said that both Selina (b.1881) and her sister Jane (b.1883) both went to America.

So....was Selina 1881 in an asylum and went to America as well?

Hello

There are references to two McLean families here.

Selina and James McLean snr were my great great grandparents. Their son, also James, fathered a large family, referenced here (not the one mentioned containing Olive and Albert). My grandfather was Samuel McLean, known as Robert. There had been another Samuel born, but he died within weeks of birth. My great grandfather James wanted the next son to carry forward the family name Samuel. The male family names were James, then William John, then Samuel. You will see this pattern with James McLean snr , who died in the sea accident 1893.

My grandfather's eldest sisters, Selina Alice and Jane, definitely emigrated to the USA. This is not a myth: there is evidence to validate the family story. The sisters went to Kings, New york. Selina Alice came back and died in the 1970s in Kent. Jane stayed. She sent money back to her family until the Wall St Crash and the Depression. I have a photo of her and her husband sent from the USA. My grandfather. told us she married a man with some hotels. I am aware that one of my grandfather's sisters went to Horsham, but my mother (his daughter, now aged 91) does not remember which one.

I am not sure what the actual query is here, but if I can help, please let me know. If this involves a family in Horsham, then it is like to be the connection with my grandfather's sister (surname McLean) which is relevant.

I should add that Selina snr was in the Asylum from 1867 (briefly out in 1868) until her death in 1903 or 4 (I forget which). The Selina who went to the USA was her eldest daughter. There is no connection to the woman who died in Devonport (recent item in this thread). There were other unconnected McLeans in Devon.

Sorry, the accident in which James McLean died was 1883 or 4 , not 1893. This was the collision between the Lord Marmion (barque under sail for Valparaiso) and the steamship Alice Bacon off the Mumbles. He was sailing as Mate on this voyage. His son. my great grandfather, was put into the Training Ship Formidable, from which he ran away. My grandfather told me he went round the world twice or thrice. He survived a U Boat attack which sank his vessel in WW1, and an accident in which his own Smack, crewed by himself and my grandfather, caught fire and sank off the Pembrokeshire coast. They came back so far in a leaky boat, bailing out, and then swaminto Broad Haven.
