The search engine is pretty good. Want to know all men, named Enoch, born 1843 +/- 2 years who are boarding in Billericay, Essex - born anywhere ? Just fill in the relevant boxes. Also, try typing in UNKNOWN as a name - fore or surname. (qualified with county, parish, dob etc)

Pleased its been helpful for some of you. I have to say I put in County and then the village name under the residence section, not the birthplace. I just printed out a whole village of about 150 people for a friend who is doing a history of that village. Same names coming up that are mentioned in an essay written by the village squire around that time. She is well pleased. Of course, I wouldnt attempt London or any big towns! But I just tried my little local town and well worth the trawl of about 600 names. Amazing how people I know today have their (unusual) names listed along side some of my ancestors. I wish Id know it could do this when I was trawling for every 28 year old Ellen in Berkshire when I had her village name from the 1901!! DOH. I could have just put in the village name and looked through for an Ellen.

Done it quite often when trying to find someone and not getting any matches. Just put the name of the place and confirm that you get matches. It can also confirm whether the name is used for parish or town or both. MB

Thank you TC. Guess I won't be packing for my conference until later. I wonder how many people were living in Southampton, Greenwich and Shoreditch with names beginning with S?
