I think its up to each and every individual how long they spend on here 1min 5min 1hr 5hrs or 24/7 up to them no one else. Should we clock on and off spend no less than 3hrs online

No-one is trying to dictate how long ANYONE should be on line / on site or on wherever But the fact that if you post and do want constructive replies then it is to your advantage to stick around a bit and be able to put input in when needed. Even if you only rely with 'I dont know....' There seems glut of people asking and and not helping those that are trying to help them.

Jess just to add another dimention I thought I'd mention 'Post your quiry on every boad to get more replies'. Better still DONT, one boad is enought and the the board guidelines tell you not to post the same subject on more than one board at a time. It's not Newbies that tend to irritate people as they are generally more corrsious than everyone else. It's often oldhands at this game that that 'forget' to acknowledge that they have seen your replies.

Pumphrey Report 25 May 2005 23:03

I think that we may be all taking this a bit too seriously really. (I don't mean the tree as I know we all take that seriously) I mean the irritation thing. I too like to jump on for 10 minutes in the morning before the kids get up. Sometimes I've thought of something during the night (How sad is that?) that I want to ask for help on so I post this before I go to work and look forward to seeing if there is a reply when I get home. Sometimes I get help and other times I don't but I don't get paranoid about it. I also trawl the boards sometimes and randomly offer help to people and sometimes members don't respond but although annoying, I just think it's their loss and then move on. Like learner drivers, we all had to be new to it once so maybe a bit of patience wouldn't go amiss? I would be mortified to think that because I'd forgotten to check for a response within the hour that someone somewhere is marking me in a little black book of people not to help. I always try to respond and give my thanks as all help is very much appreciated but if I have been guilty of 'losing my marbles' now and then, I apologise. Lets get chilled and by the way, I am now bogging off to bed without waiting for a reply - Lol! No offence of any kind intended anywhere in my message. Pam

Joy Report 25 May 2005 23:23

I remember quite recently someone asked for help - help was given. There was no acknowledgment ever. The person, with the newly acquired information, went on to ask more questions, and similar to the previous ones ...... more than once! :-) Joy

An Olde Crone Report 25 May 2005 23:37

I can't do look-ups as I don't have the facilities, so I try to help out with the other, odder sorts of information. Twice recently, I have gone to a fair amount of trouble, involving telephone calls, trips to the Library, trips to the LDS near me, only to be told by one person that she had 'decided not to bother'. As for the other person, don't know whether they are going to bother or not, I haven't had a peep! Don't even know if they got my message! Rude, I call it. Marjorie

Heather

Heather Report 26 May 2005 08:12

It isnt the lack of knowledge that annoys the good people on here, but the lack of manners. I have spent up to 2 hours looking up for people, just to get no response and if I message them, thinking they havent seen it (Ive got the old menopausal memory too!) you get back - Oh yes, I saw it but there wasnt a William in the family. Dont worry peeps, you are all brill, I dont know what I would do without each and everyone of you. When I first joined here I knew absolutely nowt (I know a bit more now). I remember someone saying 'ask if sks will do a look up'. For ages I went through the posted messages looking for someone with those intials! Bless you all for the patience and kindness you have shown me.

Hi Jess, please remember that this site covers researchers all over the world in different time zones. Here in Australia I get up early to check my many requests for help so hopefully the kind people in the UK who have assisted me will get my replies as soon as possible. if I have missed thanking anyone please accept my apologies and to the many great people who have taken the time to do look ups for me this is much appreciated. Katrina

The Bag Report 26 May 2005 10:42

Katrina, I know this site is world wide, it doesn't matter what time zone you are in - if you are up and able to post a request, please stay up long enough to reply or acknowledge!! Not you personally, of course, but generally! Jess
