Hi All, I am going to apologise for this convoluted, rambling message before I begin!! I'm on the trail of my dad's elusive family again - I know he had an 'Aunt (my g aunt) Ada' - there are pictures of me as a baby in a pram with her, and I remember her vaugely but I can't find a birth or death for her - or anything else for that matter. My dad’s family come from Hoxton, East London, but I know she lived in Hove, East Sussex – the pictures I have are of all of us on the beach and I do remember that when she died my Dad had to go with my grandad to empty her house in Hove – although I can’t remember how old I was, but couldn’t have been more than 10, because I know she died before my younger brother was born in 1972. From what I remember, and have been told since, she was my grandad’s younger sister, didn’t marry and didn’t have any children – no a lot of help to anyone!!!! I have no idea how she managed to end up in Hove, but know this to be true. I have tried searching 1837 for a birth for her up to 10 years after my grandad, but can’t find anything that fits. As it consumes so many units to look at all quarters of several years on 1837 does anyone know if there is a way to perform an ‘advanced’ search of some kind – her name is Ada Butt and I suspect her death is between 1966 and 1970 and I know it is in Hove. Does anyone have any suggestions how I might track her down? Thanks in advance. Trudy

If she died after 1966 then, hopefully, her dob should be on the death cert. Obviously, depending on who registered the death, this dob might or might not be correct, but it might be worth searching for the death cert first. There is no advanced search on 1837, but for future reference, their is also Family Relatives (covers 1866-1920) which is more fully searchable. Good luck Sarah

Was she grand enough to have been on the 'phone in the late 1960's??!! If yes, then you could try tracing the phone books for Hove (Hove library) and see when her name ceases to be listed Sarah

Hi Sarah that's a thought, she might well have been, but unfortunately I'm based in Buckinghamshire and can't really get down to Hove without a great deal of planning. thanks Trudy

Just phone the library!! Ask them if they have the books. They are much more likely to do a lookup for you than any record office as they won't get so many enq's. If thet fails, there must be someone on this site who lives in Hove.................! Sarah

Hi trudy, Do you know what year your Grandad was born? Just a rough idea will do if you don't know exactly .It might help others in looking for Ada's birth . Carol

Trudy, do you live near a main library or county archive? You can search the '1837' indexes on microfiche for free there. Its a good option if you have a massive search. A bit hard on the eyes though! Anne

Hi Carol My grandad was born 26th March 1901, Hoxton East London. His parents were Ada Florence Latter and Edward Henry Thomas Butt - I suspect that Ada was their first daughter as, with many families of the time, down the generations the oldest males and females are named after the parents! Have you looked in the 1901 census for the family?Ada obviously won't be there-having not been born yet!!!! but the parents might be on it which would give you an idea where they were living around 1901-as it was taken in March it may well be that your grandfather is on it or he may just have missed it.. Sineadxxx

Are you sure she died in Hove, as even though she lived there she could have died elsewhere. I have looked through 1837online in 1966 to 1969 and the only Ada Butt death I could find was this one:- Ada E. Butt, age 88, Sept. qtr. 1967, Leicester, 3a, 462 The only death in Hove I could find was:- Vera Butt age 74 Sept. qtr. 1968, Hove, 5H, 440 This might narrow down your search for you. Kath. x p.s. having looked at when your grandad was born, I think that for both of these deaths the ages would be wrong for your Ada.

Trudy, Maybe you should consider the possibility that her middle name was Ada and maybe the Hove death entry is correct. I had so many family members who used their middle names and no-one knew any different. It might be worth the gamble and buy the cert. best wishes, Carol
