Hello everyone Haven't really got much else to add except that I too choose the 'save to my computer' option. I used to print all of my reports but as the quantity I have has increased I now just store them electronically. I use the source reference as the file name ie: RG12_1234_Folio4_Page3 and cross reference it in my notes. Other than that I would like to say how nice it was to read a thread that was interesting and made me smile too, Kate :) PS, Duncan hope you get your summits and wotsits sorted soon ;)

Hiya Duncan, 40 summat and 256 whatsits will make your work/research slow and frustrating. Is there anyone in your family, preferably very young, who can advise you on upgrading your summat's and whatsits. I'm not taking the michael when I say 'preferably very young', amazing what our kids know about these here 'poota's. Regards Merv ps: You should be looking to upgrade your pc to a minimum of 60 gigabytes and 512mb memory card. If the first is not viable the latter can be achieved by purchasing another 256mb memory card and adding it to your 'tower', it really is easy when you've done it once ! Honestly, if you've a youngster in the family I'd be very surprised if they didn't know what to do.

Duncan Please don't baffle me!! I believe that whatever capacity your computer you still need to maintain it otherwise it will get slow - don't be put off by the number of posts on Judy's Thread there are a lot of nudges on it. Thanks Dawn. But I think the main problem is that it only has a slow processor, whatever that means, and a small memory - it's got 40 of something and 256 of something else but I don't know what either of them mean. Duncan

Glitter Baby The original Census prints fine, the problem Duncan and I have is the transcription pages. Everything was fine until Ancestry got the stupid adverts! Dawn

Hi Dawn, No I have to order mine online and there are 4 cartridges its an Epson Stylus and special type of ink Dura Bright or something for scanning as well. So I had to order from Epson direct online, £25 I had to pay well a few pence more, they didn't charge for delivery though. It doesn't last long thats the only thing. Betty

Hi again Betty, the reason I print census details off is so I don't have to store them, because my computer is already pretty slow so I guessed that the least I have on it the better, before it stops altogether. Am I getting things out of proportion here, I spend a lot on ink as well. I save the image to my computer first - in my documents which is usually a jpeg file - then open the image in a program called Irfanview. That way I can crop or rotate the image before printing - saves on the black ink. Maureen

Betty If Duncan's like me then he likes to have hard copies as well as stored on the computer. Do you not have a Cartridge World near you, my refill costs £11. Dawn

Hi Duncan YES! I have this problem and find it really annoying!! I contacted Ancestry who replied with computer jargoon which sent my brain in a tizz. I didn't want to cut and paste so decided to print a selection instead. Try this: Click for printer friendly version Move the cursor below the advert where it says for example '1861 England Census' and left click so that the cursor stays positioned at the beginning of the text that you want to print Then hold down the left click on your mouse and drag down the page highlighting all that you wish to print (bit tricky but easy when you have done it a few times) - take your finger off the mouse (all selected text will be highlighted) Now at the top of your screen on the Toolbar click 'File' then 'Print' then 'Selection' - this will print the highlighted area only. Hi Colin, Is it not better to copy and paste an then take it to word where you can store it. I would have thought printing census and BMD's out all the time would cost a lot for the ink for your printer. I just paid another £25 for ink for my printer and I think thats a lot of money every couple of months. The Scottish people are known to watch their penny's or should I say pounds!!. Betty

Hi Duncan, Yes it is that simple. You can even select print preview to show what you are going to print before you waste the paper and ink. (I got short arms and deep pockets, LOL), just to make sure you get the right thing. Good Luck, Colin.

Hi Duncan, Well there you go Colin has given you an easy way to do it. Betty

Duncan, Most people have Microsoft Office Word software. If you are not sure whether you have this on your computer, click on the 'Start' button and go to 'all programs' and see if it is there. If it is, then just click on it to open the program and it will come up with a blank page (like a sheet of paper). Then go to the transcription you want to copy. Go to the end of the transcription with your mouse and hold down the left button and drag it across and up over all the text you want to copy (this will turn it all blue). Then click with the right button anywhere in the blue and left click on 'copy'. Go to the page you have opened in 'Word', right click and then left click on the word 'paste'. You have then copied and pasted. It sounds complicated, but believe me, if my son could hammer it into my head, then anyone can do it. Kath. x
