Can anyone help with this? I am trying to find either a birth ref for my 2x great grandfather SAMUEL MASON born London (I would suspect Shoreditch) 1841/42 to SAMUEL MASON and CHARLOTTE (from earlier research I have a suggested surname of BAGNALL) but this could be incorrect, or a marriage ref for SAMUEL & CHARLOTTE. I have them all on census information from 1861 - Shown on 1861 Census at 12 Willmer(?) Gardens, Shoreditch St Leonards, Parents Samuel & Charlotte(birthplace shown as Scotland, although on later Census it shows as Banbury), and children Samuel (1843) and siblings Ann(1853), Charlotte (1860), Elizabeth (1845) and Unice(18 55) I have SAMUEL juniors subsequent marriage to MARTHA FLINT in 1867, and subsequent history from there to the present. I thought I had found him and ordered a birth cert, but have just received a refund email telling me that the parents details are incorrect. (The incorrect ref was: Sept 1842, Shoreditch, Vol 2, Page 328) After months of searching and finally thinking I’d at least part cracked it, I’m now back to square one. Anyone any ideas – eternally grateful. Trudy

Mason Samuel 32 Shoreditch, Haggerston West Mason Charlotte 29 Shoreditch, Haggerston West Mason Mary 10 Shoreditch, Haggerston West Mason Samuel 8 Shoreditch, Haggerston West Mason Elizabeth 6 Shoreditch, Haggerston West Mason Charlotte 4 Shoreditch, Haggerston West H107/1537 The town is just where they were living, not POB.

Thanks Tracey does the 1851 give a place of birth? If so, does it have one for Charlotte? Regards Trudy

I only have access to the index, so I can't see any details like that. Sorry.

Never mind, bit of a long shot, really need to find one of the two refs. to get any further with it. Thanks anyway

Tracy, does the index give more ref than just the piece number that you quoted? Folio perhaps? Trudy, If you can get the folio number as well as the piece, you should be able to trace the original page by putting a thread on the Record Office board. Some people have the images on a CD. Merry

Just getting out my Black and Decker pneumatic drill......... Why don't you get a birth cert for a different one of the children?? Best bet is Charlotte as she has the most unusual name and as the youngest child in 1851 census provided by Tracy, is likely to have the correct age (hopefully!) This looks like the one....the with the mother's maiden name you will be better placed to find the marriage. Name: Mason, Charlotte Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1847 District: Shoreditch County: London Middlesex Volume: 2 Page: 426 Merry

You have Charlotte born 1860 in your original blurb, but the 1851 and 1861 show her as 4 and 14.... Merry

Hi I have found a Marriage in 1839 for A Charlotte Bagnell No spouse is on the index so you would have to apply for cert. Just thought it might be of interest as it was registered in the district of Banbury Name: BAGNELL, Charlotte Record Type: Marriages Quarter: December Year: 1839 District: Banbury County: Northamptonshire Oxfordshire Warwickshire Volume: 16 Page: 18 Regards Kath xx

I had a look at the images, and there is a Samuel Mason on the same reference as the one Kath gave for Charlotte :) Having said that, the page number looks like 8, not 18.

Tracy - Samuel Masons marriage ref is Banbury page 8 not 18 I bet one of them has been mis-entered in the GRO index.....but which one?? Trudy - I would still get Charlotte junrs birth cert to ensure not barking up the wrong tree!! Kath - Samuel wasn't born 1841/42, that's a mistake in the original post!! He was 20 years older!! Thanks all of you - sorry had to pop into work for an hour and haven't been able to get back. I do have that ref for the marriage of Samuel and Charlotte, but was trying to tie up the maiden name first. I will have a look for the ref for Charlotte junior, hadn't spotted the discrepancy between my age and census, but had always wondered if she was older as the Masons do tend to name their oldest children after the parents, and try to order that, as for Samuel birth ref. could well be, may have to order and see. Thanks to all of you for your time. Trudy

Sorry Merry - just seen you've given me Charlotte's birth - thank you very much.

Can anyone tell me whether, if I could get a look-up on the 1841 for Samuel and Charlotte, whether it would give an address? It would seem odd that everything else is Shoreditch, but Samuel's birth (if the 1841 ref is correct) should be Islington - just a thought. Thanks Trudy
