Merry, I know the certs are the only way, but I'm exhausting all avenues before I start shelling out again. I've spent a small fortune already in £ and time. You're spot on as well, when I started this with a father named Green and a mother Smith I thought it would be a nightmare, but so far have been the easiest to track.... well until I hit Hannas, Hanas, Hanners....................etc etc

Can't answer your very last question, as I keep asking myself the same!! Never mind the 1901 census......where's her birth reg as well???? Of course.........her marriage cert might throw some light............****%*%*%*%*%*%**.......OUCH!! I'm almost pleased I have Smiths on my tree! lol Merry

Leah Whale nee Hannas died Sept 1954 aged 57 B'ham 9C Page 324. Making her approx birth 1897. SO WHERE IS SHE !!!!!!!!!!!! on the 1901 census. Why do I do this ?

Just to add to the confusion, I have been speaking to my gran today (Margaret would have been m in law) and she remembered that Aunt Leah and Uncle Dick lived over the road from Newport and Margaret. She couldn't remember who they were related to so I did a quick search on www(.)familyrelatives(.)org and low and behold: Hannas Leah Whale Aston.6d 1013 Marriage 2 1919 All I have to do now is find the death to get an approx DOB

Matthew, You could try other alternative spellings based on the way they might have pronounced Hannas/Hanners. Assuming the second 'a' in Hannas was silent, you could then try Hands, Hanns, Hance/Hence, or even Hain(e)s. Hanas could also have been written/indexed incorrectly for Hands if the writing on the original certificate or census was poor. A 'short' stemmed 'd' could look like an 'a' - turning Hands into Hanas. Sorry if this confuses the issue, but it may be a reason why you can't find Samuel on earlier censuses and why there are so few Hannas/Hanners about. Carole

Sorry Matthew, we've got side tracked with Samuel which isn't helping much with Margaret's name change, I guess a father's name or possibly witnesses names on her marriage cert may help you with that. AS to Samuel, as there are so few listings of him with any of the spelling variations I'd guess they are all the same person who having been born in 1850, lied to make himself look nearer Harriet's age in 1891. By 1901 he probably couldn't remember how old he was anyway, though he was a little nearer the truth that time, and whoever reported his death may well have just guessed at an age. I'd love to know where he was hiding in 1861, 71 and 81 though. Perhaps that can be tomorrow's quest.

So now hes 54 in 1904 !!! 41,46,48,54 =ages accounted for samuel!!! some of this must be wrong-we must have an illiterate,or non numerate family or 2 samuels.

And hes 46 in 1904 if you take the 1901 census into consideration!!!

Ages are way out here for Samuel-28 in 1891 makes 41 in 1904.

I'm happy to go with the Hannas spelling for harriet's memorial. There's a Samuel Hannas death aged 48 Sep quarter 1904 Birmingham 6d 145 so by then the family probably were spelling it that way even if it started differently. Possible birth for Samuel recorded as Hanners March quarter 1850 Aston 16 202

Reckon the gravestone was amistranscription aswell-convinced the name was HANNERS.

I really appreiciate the effort, it would be nice to find the marriage, I think it would be around 1905 as there first son ( Frank) was born about then. My gt aunt Edi also remembers she had a brother (another Newport) who died before she was born, she thinks he died in 1907, she was born 1912. Edi also told me very little was spoken about Margaret's family, and she always referred to her Nan (which I think is Harriet) as Sarah AND she thinks her Grandfather was from Ireland who did a runner to America. However I realise family recollection is one of the worst references. Gt Aunty Edi also thinks Magaret had a sister called Leah (only found that out tonight). Matthew
