I think I have found my nana on 1901 census. It's the right year and area of birth, but she is a border with a family (name) unknown to me. How do I know if it's the right one?? thanks Manda x :-) |

Well I guess you have checked her family out and seen that she is missing from their home that night? You should really check backwards by looking at her marriage certificate and seeing where she was living when she married. |

Sometimes you can't be sure, but often when you do more research you find another link with the family the person was boarding or lodging with which will confirm it. Kate. |

Hi Heather, Jess I have her birth cert - born 1884, which would make her 16 on the 1901 census - which it says. She is a border with a family unknown (to me) and no sign of her parents. I know her father was a boatman, which could explain why I can't find him and his wife. I have her marriage cert - married in 1904, so that family she is living with is nothing to do with her marriage! Manda x :-) |

Have you found her with her family in 1891? Are the 1901 details the same? Could she be in Service by then perhaps? Can you get a clue to this from the head's occupation, or mabe a mention in Google or A2A site |

Right! I've got - Alice Ann Fyles, born 14/11/1884 Kildwick, Skipton. Father Henry Fyles, a boatman. Mother Mary Fyles (formerly Holgate) X the mark of Mother registering the birth. Alice married Herbert Mawson Holgate 30/04/1904, aged 19. father Henry Fyles (Deceased) On the 1901 census(the one that I've found), she is living with a family call DAVY in Baildon, Yorkshire - West Riding. She is a cotton ??(something or other!) Born Kildwick. So to me it seems to be the correct one - but I just wondered how I could confirm it!?! Manda x :-) |

We recently found out that 1891 is not complete. She /may/ be among those yet to be indexed. I'll keep looking though :) I do think the one in 1901 is probably yours. I can't find any others that might be the same one. |

Oh I see Tracey - Didn't know that! thanks anyway. Guys, I think I may have found her Grandfather on the 1871 census! Don't ask me how, if I can't find her mother and father!! lol From the little info that my mum gave me, Alice Ann's grandfather was also called Henry Fyles born 1819c - a boatman from Lancashire. Apparently they/he came up to Leeds/Liverpool canal to Bradford/skipton area. On the 1871 Census I have found Henry Fyles, from Lancashire, living on the Leeds/Liverpool Canal on a boat!! Right age too. So fingers cross that is correct, but it still leaves me stuck on Henry Fyles and Mary Holgate (Alice's mother and father) Manda x :-) |

Bernice - I know!!! lol!! Nightmare - I've got cousins all over the place marrying each other!! lol I done ok on the Holgate's, from my granddad backwards (ie: Herbert Mawson Holgate) But I haven't been able to find where Mary Holgate (Alice's mother) comes in! I know they were cousins of sorts, but how (yet!) I've no idea! Manda x :-) |
